I can't believe he as only 51. I thought he was in his 60's for some reason.

Boyz n the Hood was my first look the life many less fortunate African Americans lead. Watching it for the first time was a "You'll never forget where you were" moment for me. It was a very powerful experience.

And even though it was seen through the lens of the African American experience it didn't pull punches. The evil gang bangers were truly evil, not purely products of white racism. They don't make films like Boyz n the Hood and Menace 2 society anymore.
 
Wow. Wonder if he ended up being a statistic himself (I believe black people have higher rates of heart disease leading them to dying younger from heart attacks).

I liked his movies, well some of them. Higher Learning seems especially pertinent these days, but just shows that those problems have been there for some time, it takes society a long time to really give a shit about them. But if it had come out in the past like 2 years, it would probably win an Academy Award, because it really fits societal topics from now.
