John Romero says only the Wii will survive

is this a repost? ... i didn't see this here 😛

2. Tell us what do you think of the current conditions of the videogame industry? What bad and cool things are happening today?

JR: I?m so happy that gaming has gotten so huge! As a species, with the technology that we?ve developed I would be very sad if gaming had not progressed very far during the past 30 years. But it has and we have an incredible range of games to play now so I?m not down on the industry at all - never have been, in fact. Good things happening today are the emergence of truly amazing MMORPG?s that can take over your entire life like no other game in history could - it?s an awesomely compelling category to be in and is one that?s immune to software piracy which has plagued the industry since its start. Bad things in the industry continue to be too many bad clones of great games. The casual gaming scene exploded like crazy but it?s due for a settling down. Same goes for mobile which is a huge, huge space and is only going to get bigger as it moves through its various phases of growth to be one of the biggest segments in the gaming industry.

3. Where is it all going? What do you see happening in the next five years and beyond?

JR: Right now MMOs, mobile and PC episodic are really polarizing into the newest most important segments in gaming. Next-gen console is big but its future isn?t too bright with the emergence of cheap PC multi-core processors and the big change the PC industry will go through during the next 5 years to accommodate the new multi-core-centric hardware designs. My prediction is that the game console in the vein of the PS3 and XBOX 360 is going to either undergo a massive rethink or go away altogether. The Wii has the perfect design for a console that doesn?t pretend to be a PC and is geared more toward casual gamers than hardcore gamers. The hardcore gamers are going to either be playing on their PCs or a new PC-like platform that sits in the living room but still serves the whole house over wifi, even the video signal.

4. What can you say about your new company and project? Why all the secrecy?

JR: I can say that we?re making a PC MMORPG but can?t remark on specifics because we believe we?re creating something that?s the first of its kind and we want to be first to market with it.

read the whole interview

evidently there was some hate mail ... so he clarified:

April 11 update
I?m not the only one that?s predicting the end of the console. ATI definitely knew the writing was on the wall regarding video adapters when they sold to AMD. Why? Because the multi-core systems of the future will utilize the on-board-cores to handle video; no need for a separate adapter. It?s already happened to audio in a limited fashion with on-board audio chips (great quality vs. onboard video) and will continue to transform when multi-core hits. Instead of buying the Creative X-Fi Gamer audio adapter you?ll probably be buying the software instead or else it?ll become a built-in driver courtesy of Microsoft?s latest OS. What does this mean for console? It means PCs that are cheaper because they?re based on a solid foundation of several inexpensive CPU cores and the hardware will begin to rely on software to control them for many different functions which include audio and video. When hardware design reaches this stage the expensive custom chip development of consoles becomes a risky ROI.

Who else is predicting the end of console? Well, here?s an article just 5 days old I just became aware of while reading Digg links to my interview. Now, I agree with the prediction for the Playstation and XBOX console timelines (maybe one more generation) but not Nintendo. Why? Because if you want to play Mario, Zelda, Starfox, Wario, Donkey Kong, etc. you?ll only be able to do it on a Nintendo system be it handheld or console.

Nintendo?s power is in their IP and they own a universe of their making in which most of us are gladly a resident. In terms of handheld systems, no one has been able to achieve their success in almost 20 years. So I?ll leave Nintendo out of the doom & gloom of console because they separate themselves from the technology path that Microsoft?s gaming division and Sony have been following.

Nintendo knows that game design is more important than the hardware you run it on and that you need just enough visual flash to interest the buyer but don?t focus on the flash - focus on the fun.

i for one will welcome our new Wii overlords

he's a bit off in saying that MMORPGs are immune to piracy though. anyone ever hear of free or private servers? all you need is a copy of the client (which several mmorpgs offer for free in one way or another).

The consoles like the Xbox and Playstation aren't going anywhere. They're just evolving from a purely gaming machine to a home entertainment machine. The next gen consoles will almost certainly function as a Tivo/DVR player, voip if not video/web conferencing, music and video center, and basic but core PC functionalities such as web browsing, emails and IMs.

Gaming is no longer a kid genre now, but more oriented towards adults, especially with the explosion and continued development of MMOs.

For this generation, Nintendo may beat MS and Sony, but in the long run, why will people buy a console just for gaming, when their home entertainment machine can as well, and with better graphics?

Private servers are crap. They don't have the CPU or bandwidth for thousands of simultaneous players, which is the whole appeal or MMOs.

not when the xbox360 and PS3 are unable to compete with the PC's Gfx ... just next year

DX10 will BLOW THEM away!

they didn't get much of an "advantage" to begin with

You must never have played L2Revenge.
Better quality server and a better staff than retail. Too bad Lineage got boring real quick.
Well, I don't think consoles will die simply because you don't have to have any knowledge to buy one. With a PC, people get overwhelmed with hardware. PC gaming has been more of an elite area because the only people who could run games to their full potential are those who have a solid understanding of a computer. With consoles, any old average joe can go out and start playing. Also, the Wii is not going to reign. Zelda is about the only game on it that kept me interested for more than 30 minutes. I can actually somewhat enjoy playing the 360 and PS3, but I'm terrible at console games haha.

never said they were good, just saying that they can be pirated.

they *can be* but they are *not* draining a lot of revenue away from MMORPGS

why the heck would anyone want a console when a cheaper, multi-purpose PC offers better gaming and *much* better graphics?
😕

Well whatever happens with consoles, I still need a PC to do 3D modeling, graphic art work, and all the other stuff I do other than play games, which is all consoles can do currently.

The only thing I've upgraded in the past 3+ years is my video card. People upgrade their PCs too often, and then they complain about it. Usually all you need is a video card upgrade, provided your CPU isn't ancient.

Christ... you're just a typical PC-only graphics whore. How does a PC offer "better gaming"? You are so out of touch with reality it's absurd. Until you can convince people to buy modern PCs that are capable of playing modern PC games very well right out of the box (i.e. don't need to buy an add-on graphics card because most people, believe it or not, can't be bothered to do that) and place said PC in their primary entertainment center... then, no, consoles aren't going anywhere. And until this happens, great games like God of War 2... which blows away nearly all PC games despite being graphically inferior... will still keep getting released on consoles and people will keep buying them. I'm more than technically competent enough to build, and have built, top of the line PCs and I still play consoles more than my PCs. It's just a different gaming experience and one that I enjoy. Talking to PC-only gamers like yourself is like talking to a brick wall. You can't seem to get beyond graphics and the all-mighty mouse to the reality of what most people want out of games.

Consoles aren't going anywhere. But I don't understand this "all in one" craze, where the game console tries to become the center of the living room. Maybe I'm just not the target audience, but when I press power on a game console its to play a game. I've got a $30 DVD player for movies and a VCR for recording...there's nothing on TV worth watching, much less recording. And my movies all come from netflix.

I don't need my game console to tell me the weather, or to vote or whatever else they're doing. I have a computer already, and so does pretty much everyone.

I wouldn't go as far to say PS3 and X360 will die out, but I'm all for Nintendo's unique vision and innovation. I think if a console is aiming to compete against PC in terms of power and graphics and all-in-one functionality it's not going to do well. I think when HTPC becomes mainstream that can spell trouble fot the PC-liked consoles. For me all I need at the living-room is a htpc besides the TV. Games look amazing at 1360x768 with AA, but it cannot offer a similar gaming experience that Wii does that's why i have a Wii there for party time.

I'm also amazed that many ppl were very suprised that I have a PC hook up to my HDTV and they never heard of the term HTPC. And with how MS is making windows more and more gaming and HTPC friendly, htpc can potentially invade into more and more living-rooms. Even if it won't happen, console gaming will not kill PC gaming (old argument) because console will not replace our PC for non-gaming choirs, and as long as ppl still own a PC, PC gaming will not die.

When was the last time that The Romero said something that came true? 1991? Please, this guy has a proven track record of failure and the fact that he has a paycheck still coming in is nothing short of a miracle itself.

so are you a console whore?
😕

i began playing video games on the very first console and the first PCs 😛

it is *refreshing* to seen another PoV and i do enjoying watching you console elitists squirm - for a change - as your gaming "investment" seems to have a really *short* life - this round

--better luck with xbox720 and PS4 ... if they even care to compete with DX10 - next year

and the Wii *will* suffice for "the reality of what most people want out of games" besides the PC gamers

the future of the high-end console is very much in doubt IF these "cheap PC HW" predictions prove to be true 😉

r600 is gonna be *cheap*
... and may be the new trend

and when is the *last time* YOU guys said anything that came true?

you have been predicting the death of PC gaming for over a decade

Read my other post in the other thread about console vs PC gaming. I don't care to explain again why consoles aren't going anywhere, but just know that they are not. As I said above it's not all about graphics anway. It's funny how you automatically fell back on that just as I said, huh? GoW2 > *

Also, do you not think I have a PC? That's what always amuses me about you PC-only guys. My PC is moderately capable right now and I plan to upgrade for UT3. I just happen to enjoy and understand the attraction of consoles. I'm not instantly blinded to everything else by something like DX10.

Christ... you're just a typical PC-only graphics whore. How does a PC offer "better gaming"?

Typical graphics whore? A PC offers better gaming because you can:
A. Customize your experience down to the finest detail
B. Mod the game and not be banned from all internet activity
C. You don't have to pay for the game AND the online play (unless it's an MMO, but MMO's are the same way on consoles)

Also, since when was all that PC gamers cared about was graphics and the mouse? Sure, they're good selling points, but I only buy games that I enjoy. Consolers are often the ones who are graphics whores anyways. "Next-gen" was all about superior graphics compared to what was on the market, but I have yet to see a console game that actually looks better than a modern PC game. Whenever I hear anyone at school talking about a new game they got for the 360, the first thing I hear is "Dude, the graphics are sweet!" and they get on this tangent of every little detail present in the graphical appearance of the game. I hardly ever hear people say outright "Yeah, the game is great! I love how you are able to do X thing, and X idea is really awesome!" I just hear praise about the graphics. Most PC gamers actually talk about the experience the games offer them when they first buy and play them.
EDIT: Oh, and how are PC gamers blinded by DX10? I don't plan to upgrade for DX10 until games actually utilize it to it's fullest extent. Also, DX10 is not all about graphics. It is about the entire experience of the game, and possibly now even the physics.

As long as consoles can keep exclusives or at least semi-exclusives, they will be fine. Semi-exclusives referring to a delayed release on the PC (such as Gears of War being released a year later for the PC... note that this is just an example).

and when is the *last time* YOU guys said anything that came true?

"You" as in PC and console gamer? I've never predicted the death of PC gaming. It's not exactly at its peak though... the bulk of the revenue on the PC side it being generated by 1 game... WoW. Not exactly a healthy market. But, no, I don't think it's going to die. And what other predictions are you talking about?

These are some points I agree with you on. Apoppin, who has been predicting PC gamings death? Like, what group are you specifically talking about.
Definitely agree with you on the WoW thing. I can't wait until PC developers start cranking out the good stuff in the next 2 years and get that crap out of the market (hopefully) 😀.

not too many of you are posting from your xbox 😛

again ... this is an *alternate* view

and i kinda think it will make more sense to you as the next 12-18 months unfold

instead of arguing about "possibilities" ... like some of the Videophiles ...

let's make it a 'wait and see'

EDIT: the *you* i am referring to is a *general* you - i.e. the console fans

... and *who* has been predicting the death of PC gaming?
!

just google it 😛

it has been in SO many threads here - for years

I'm just going to say right now... not gonna happen. It goes way beyond even simple hardware prices... which I have no reason to believe are going to fall through the floor anytime soon. I've already stated many reasons why consoles aren't going to disappear, even the more powerful ones. Think about it, even if these mythical super-cheap mulit-core processors do appear, the next batch of consoles will use them too which will make them cheaper too. And they will still have simplicity on their side, which is what the average consumer wants.... in addition to my other points about not wanting to maintain two PCs, etc... This guy is flat out wrong. I have no need to "wait and see".

Well, that's true. I mostly referring to the people in this thread. But it is also way more than consoles gamers that have been predicting the death of PC gaming. In fact, most console gamers really don't give a sh!t about PC games unless they also happen to be a PC gamer. It's most often predicted by the gaming press and "industry insiders".
