John Oliver's Last Week Tonight is better than the Daily Show or Colbert

Since about the 2nd episode, I have been thinking that Oliver's show was quite possibly better. Now I am sure.

At first I thought it was due to the favorable lens of hindsight, and less time to fill combining to make his show the equivalent of a best of TDS or TCR...

But there was more to it than that. And I think this month old piece explains just why this show is so much better than I ever expected it to be...

And if you arent watching Last Week Tonight, you should. It's fantastic.

because the daily show's gotten worse. if you compare it to the daily from 2 years ago, that was better than john oliver, who's not really that good.

imho.

John Oliver going to HBO. Colbert going to CBS. How come Jon Stewart hasn't gotten a big gig elsewhere? He made those two what they are today. Those two aren't even funny, IMHO. Stewart is but he's still stuck on Comedy Central. What gives?

I think he was better than Stewart when he took over for those few months.

Unfortunately he's on HBO, so even though he can be as edgy as he wants, only a handful of people get to see him.

john oliver is tolerable in small doses.

Which is why a weekly show suits him the best.

He is fantastic in these 30 minute spats of hilarious, thought provoking fury.

Since I doubt anyone read my link, I'll summarize: Colbert and Stewart pander to their audiences (albeit in a highbrow way). Oliver challenges the audience; he confronts them - much more so than either of those two do. And maybe it's just his writers, but the article suggests a lot of it his doing.

Anyway, it's a great show, and I started this thread in appreciation. I look forward to late Sunday nights again (thanks for making the GoT layoff that much more tolerable J.O.)

I don't know how Oliver got his own fake news show. He was awful as a replacement for Jon and his current show is basically crap. He was good at what he did on The Daily Show, but he just sucks as a host.

...and that's where everyone disagrees with you.

All of it caters to the liberals, which is sad. I like watching Bill Maher just for the fact that there are conservatives there to retort people's bullshit from time to time.

Though most of the time he brings on 2 liberals and has a gangbang of fucking over the lone conservative 🙄

Colbert has never been funny. I never understand why ANYONE would find that entertaining. It's like sarcasm for the mentally handicapped, which I guess I can understand since it's geared towards liberals as well.

Not everyone by a long shot. After a couple of trys I barely watched the Daily Show that summer, and I bet it's overall ratings were way down when Oliver was host.

I agree, small doses he's OK.

Stewart is executive producer of the Daily Show and the Colbert Report (until he moves to CBS). Why would he leave and give that up?

I'm not sure how you think he's challenging his audience when mostly what he does it rant on and on and then beats his point to death some more. If he presented both sides of a argument and challenged people to come up with their own conclusions I'd agree. What you get however is a very heavy handed 'this is how you should think otherwise you're wrong and we'll mock you' speech with photoshopped graphics (cause that make the point more real with the mouth breathers as we've learned from Facebook).

Because he can do more on a much bigger network. Unlike Oliver and Colbert, he's actually funny. And he single-handledly created this type of news comedy genre. He deserves better and I have no doubt that his audience will follow him.

As long as fox news exists Colbert will be hilarious.

Since he is executive producer he gets to call the shots but more importantly, he is cashing in. He has the audience, he has the impact he craves, he has freedom and he is making money. I don't think a network can compete with that. Since Oliver and Colbert weren't executive producers, they got nice pay bumps for leaving. Stewart, not so much.

Uhh, I think he can be executive producer of any show if he wanted to. But, maybe you're right. Maybe he's happy where he is. It's just sad to see where the show is, though, compared to where the un-funny Colbert is going. The Daily Show is on 11th Avenue around 51st Street, across from a baseball park by the highway. Colbert will be on Broadway.

Between the 3 I think Colbert has them beat. Used to be Daily Show but while it's still funny it has gotten a bit stale, although with still some brilliant moments. Colbert is just too good now.

I like Oliver, I don't have HBO but so many are on YouTube that I have seen a bunch. I think his is a different style of show so it can't be compared but I think he is perfect for his 20 minute rants on one subject. Thoroughly enjoyable, in-depth and has some legit laugh out loud moments every time.

Who is Liz Winstead? Craig Kilborn?
