John McCain diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer

CNN is reporting he was diagnosed with Glioblastoma. A particularly nasty and aggressive primary form of brain cancer. It is what both Ted Kennedy and Beau Biden had. Really sad news and hope he holds up well.

Sanjay Gupta spoke to his doctors with his permission. No link yet. Survival rate is typically about one year from diagnosis with treatment.

This means he should get two votes instead of just one. That way he can vote in the most brain damage legislation possible and leave us with a long and confusing legacy.

I feel bad for the guy that this made him look like an absolute idiot on what could be the biggest political stage of a generation.

I hope his family is all right.

Since this is P&N, I do wonder if he will step down and if there will be a special election for the seat and how that will play out for AZ.

Most states replace by appointment, AZ being one of them. Someone else will finish his term in that event.

I wish the best for McCain and his family. I respect the man and his service to this country. At least he has the best healthcare the US has to offer....

He will have to step down. He just won a re-election campaign that would have given him 6 more years and the GOP senate majority is already so razor thin, that they cannot truly hope to get anything done unilaterally without him.

This is not necessarily a death knell for Mr McCain. I assume that since the glioblastoma is only being found on a pathology specimen from a distal blood clot that it's a really small tumor. Almost certainly he underwent a pre-surgical MRI for this orbital clot thing and for it not to have been found prior suggests its really small in size (or was diagnosed as something else such as an old stroke). However the treatment for glioblastoma involves some drugs that will seriously interfere with personality and decision making, talk less all the medications for pain he may end up being on.

I hate to think this, but it could explain his weirdness during the Comey hearing.

Would never wish this on another person.

I wish him the best, although I feel a bit conflicted considering he is an instrumental vote in Republican efforts to remove millions of people in need of care from insurance and Medicaid rolls. Sort of the opposite of what Kennedy did.

I wish him a speedy recovery so that he has time for some self reflection of his politics of late.
