Reporter starts asking Mayer some political questions that have nothing to do with his music..

And this is exactly why ATOTers will love it. Being a douche is what most here excel at. They'll somehow admire John for being a huge douche when this reporter was simply doing what their editor told them to.

The goal of the editor was to get Mayer to say something quoteworthy, rather than boring bland stuff that 99% of entertainers do--and Mayer gave it to them. It's a win-win situation.
