Heh. Longest thread title I've ever put up. Anyway.

I know a lot of y'all are into downloading <cough>illegal</cough> MP3's. Here's a better option. 🙂

I've posted about this program before, but thought it needed another mentioning - the community is growing faster by the day, and the downloads I get from this program are the fastest of any P2P program I've ever seen.

I'm talking about Furthurnet - a P2P client that allows sharing of live, legal material from bootleg-friendly bands. The list of bands that allow this type of trading is pretty long, but here's a sampling of the arists I've downloaded either MP3 (at home, on cable) or SHN shows (at school, OC3 🙂) of:

Bela Fleck & The Flecktones
Dave Matthews Band
Dave Matthews (solo)
Phish
Counting Crows
Martin Sexton
David Grisman
John Mayer
Ben Folds (solo)
Ben Folds Five
Pearl Jam
REM

Anyway - there are tons of other bands that have great sounding bootlegs up on the net too. I just figured I'd share. Right now (a Sunday, so less people online than usual), there are 1300+ hosts, 17800+ shared bootlegs, and 8.39 Terabytes of live, legal mp3s up there. On cable, I'm downloading one set at 700kb/s and another at 500kb/s (it downloads from multiple hosts at once, like Morpheus & Kazaa).

Once again, www.furthurnet.com - give it a try.

I downloaded an incredible, 900MB, SHN, 3 disc, 2 hour and 45 minute Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds set.

I like FurthurNet. 🙂

For those who don't know, SHN is a lossless form of compressing music. The compression rate isn't super hot, but it's good enough since you don't lose quality.

This doesn't piggyback on other networks, like limewire/bearshare/whatever does, does it ? My university net connection has most filesharing ports blocked or throttled, so if it does, it's not even worth my time to download.

No, it uses its own.
