Simply not true, he never said he didn't like his fans.. however, he did say many times that he didn't like the way his fans (and Beatle fans), or hangers-on treated them like they were gods. He (and the other beatles) said many times that they would be brought 'Afflicted' people to 'heal', and that bothered him to a great extent.
I'm not old enough to have been around when they were together (born in '73, My first Record was Magical Mystery Tour, given to me at age 4), but I do understand the influence they had, and what they helped change. If you don't know the story of the Beatles or Lennon, and/or you weren't around at the time, then you honestly have no idea!
They really did have a HUGE influence on Rock & Roll, and the better part of a Generation. But not alone, there were many other artists just as Influential - Bob Dylan, Hendrix, and The Who come to mind, but the Beatles opened the door for most of it. Lennon claims they were just copying their heros of the day (Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Elvis, The Shirelles, The Mowtown Sound, etc...), and incorporating it into their own music. He said to rolling stone in 1980 - "you see, there was no great hidden meaning in all of it, we were just a great little rock & roll band".
I agree that it seems a little more oversensationalized as every year passes. What about George??
