Saw Journey in concert during the summer, he sounds EXACTLY the same and they put on a great show. I'm excited !!!

Except that was not Steve Perry who was doing the vocals. :frown:

Do try and get over this. They would not be as good right now WITH Steve Perry. His voice was getting where he couldn't pull it off anymore, toward the end. I was a fan of SP but I also realize the band needed to move on. Since I like and support the rest of the band, I choose to move on and still support them now. 🙂

Hmm.. Kenny G sold more albums than Journey:

how's michael bolton doing?

He's a no-talent ass-clown. Also, Conan O'Brien could kick his ass.

Speaking of Kenny G though... dude can play a note for like 45 minute straight. You gotta respect that. He does some kind of circular breathing thing, so he can inhale and exhale at the same time. That shouldn't even be possible.

It's not Journey without Steve Perry.

BTW, what time are they expected to play? I have somewhere I need to be in the afternoon and I don't want to miss the show.

Isn't it normal to be able to breathe in and out at the same time? I can do that.

Try holding a note for longer than a minute. Can you inhale while you're doing it without pausing?

Interesting side note: Steve Augeri, the first singer after Perry, sounded much like Perry. Towards the end, when he developed his throat condition, he was lip-synching live, and they were piping in vocals recorded from before his throat condition.

Jeff Scott Soto, who has a very powerful voice, just didn't sound enough like Perry. He also couldn't quite get to the top of the range for some of the classic songs. But sounded good on the more full-voice songs.
You might not know his name, but he sang with Yngvwie Malmsteen, and also was Marky Mark Wahlberg's "singing" voice in the movie Rock Star.

Current singer Arnel Pineda is the closest I've heard to Perry. He can really hit all the notes.

I think that nobody really knows what kind of vocal chops Steve Perry has left. He doesn't sing for anyone, and hasn't in years, other than occasionally in the studio. One would think, however, that a singer's voice at age 60 would not be able to go to the same places as it did at age 30.

That said, nobody would care if he and Journey reunited. He'd still sound like Steve Perry, and like all singers his age, they'd just play some of the higher songs in a lower key, and he could duck some of the highest notes live, like he did even in his prime.
Nobody hits every note, every night, for a whole tour.

From Wikipedia:

Circular breathing is a technique used by players of some wind instruments to produce a continuous tone without interruption. This is accomplished by breathing in through the nose while simultaneously blowing out through the mouth using air stored in the cheeks.

It would actually be impossible to breath in and out at the same time.

RE: Augeri's throat condition: I watched him warm-up, at the insistence of his vocal "coach":disgust: for far longer and way sooner in the day than was necessary. He left his best notes on the floor of green rooms all over this nation and if he had recognized that, might still be doing the job.
I think part of their resurgence is due in no small part to the new claimed sobriety on the part of the Principle Player. Not seeing every day filtered through Grey Goose Goggles helps, no doubt.

Journey playing now!

ETA - They performed 'Don't Stop Believing'. I wonder if they're going to show anymore of it.

Supposedly they are on for 1 hour, but I've heard they were only going to televise 1 song. This is a private gig, I'm told. Saw the live stream from my computer. They looked great.

That sucks that they're only televising 1 song. Oh well.

I won't stop, believing, that the Patriots will win the Superbowl next year, and a perfect season to boot... I'll hold on to that ffeeeelllingg...

Journey...I guess we are lucky that State Fair season does not coincide with the Super Bowl which made their appearance possible. The only real question is why REO Speedwagon and Molly Hatchet didn't get in on this gig. Oh well, maybe next year.

-KeithP (who just purchased a bunch of Journey tunes through Amazon's MP3 store and has Speedwagon & Hatchet songs in his library as well)

All Journey is these days is a glorified tribute band that's borrowing the name. The band is nothing without Steve Perry and Randy Jackson. 🙂

This is crap! I tivoed NBC fully expecting to see Journey and they showed NOTHING! I am pissed beyond belief.....

well, not really, but I am disappointed.

Hope you TIVO'd all day because they were on about 3 hours ago.

Riiiight. Randy Jackson had a pretty short stint with Journey. And you can't borrow a name when two founding originators are still with the band and Jonathan Cain, who either wrote or co-wrote most of their 80's hits.

That was cool, I had not seen them with the new singer.
Compuwiz1, that Manila trip sounds awesome. I hope you can get the time.

I wouldn't walk across the street to see Journey for free but I bet a lot of Middle Age Soccer Moms and Hair Dressers on Fire would. I like a little testosterone in my Rock like Journey use to have before that Fegula Steve Perry joined and twatted them up.
