John Frusciante, above, the on-again-off-again guitarist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, announced on his Web site (johnfrusciante.com) on Wednesday that he had quit the band “over a year ago.” It is the second time he has left the group; after joining in 1988 as a replacement for its original guitarist, Hillel Slovak, who died of a heroin overdose, Mr. Frusciante, 39, left in 1992 and returned six years later. “My musical interests have led me in a different direction,” he wrote. The band has not named a replacement.

Name doesn't ring a bell.

As long as the lead guy and flea are still there then no one will notice.

Yeah....they weren't popular before he joined. When he left for 6 yrs they were horrible. The only success they have ever had has been when he was playing guitar for them. His guitar playing formed their signature sound.

lol... without frusciante RHCP will be even worse than they already are. People love to jerk off over flea because he plays slap bass and he's definitely a talented musician but frusciante is the glue that combines flea's bass with kiedis' made up gibberish of a vocal style. He single handedly rescued and made that band.

RHCP have been awful for years, I hope they hang up the towel for good. At least frusciante is making awesome music with omar rodriguiz-lopez and cedric bixler zavala.

I surprised Will Ferrel has remained on drums all this time with his movie career going.

the album with dave navarro was quite different. I sure would notice the difference without him there.

I assume by "quite different," you mean "unlistenable." I bought One Hot Minute despite not really liking anything but the first 3 RHCP albums (which I do enjoy) because I was curious about what Dave Navarro would bring to the mix. I learned that what he brought was a chemistry that would make their already-mediocre music downright awful. Unfortunately my then-roommate liked the album and would play it quite often - I actually thought about hiding or scratching it to get away from it.

Smart move, he has talent, check out his solo albums. RHCP needs a new sound as well, same shit, different album. They need fresh blood.

Win Win, I say.

I forget were I read this but Chad Smith the drummer said he was going to do anther record with RHC then go straight back to Chickenfoot.

The way he saw it was that he do the record with RHC, Joe Satriani would do anther solo, and Sammy Hargar and Michael Anthony would do their thing.

It would be interesting if they ask Joe Satriani to fill in. I'm not sure how that would work but that would be a pretty good possibility but I'm only speculating at this point.

Flea and smith are rhcp, not frusciante.

I hated him for going after the Omar rodriguez sound

They may be RHCP, but Frusciante makes RHCP good, though I did enjoy them before he even came along (Freaky Styley and Uplift Mofo were great).

Give it a rest. Give it a rest. Give it a rest, boy!

This saddens me. Yes you guys can all hate on RHCP all you want, but some of their songs are my favorites. While I do enjoy Flea's enthusiasm, and Anthony definitely is part of the final product, to say that Frusciante isn't the glue that holds RHCP's sound together would be disingenuous.

Good luck to all of them in their future musical endeavors.

Himma hamma i put my love in your tight mamma jamma.

I will be auditioning for the job of Anthony Kiedis. Wish me luck.
