You know I've been seeing this guy on TV a lot (specifically FOX) about some show called Crossing Over with John Edward. Does anybody know anything about him? I'm just curious as to whether he's a quack or has some substantial 'knowledge'.

John Edward's personal website
SCFI.com website for his show

I don't really care much about psyhics, but then I've seen anybody with their own TV show that is 'the most popular late-night telvision show ever for SCFI'.

<< Suggestive and leading Quack >>

But how can a quack get his own TV show and be on so many nationally televisied programs like Ophra, Larry King, Leeza, etc.,

Maybe because Oprah, Larry King and Leeza are all nuts themselves. Surely you can't be serious when you ask that question? Have you ever seen Richard Simmons, Pat Robertson, or Jerry Falwell on TV?

I'm still not convinced he's a total fake, but then listen to some of the questions:

"who's the person with the upper respiratory / heart condition ?"
"who has the name that begins with a "J" ?"

Still some of the things he comes up with seem to defy explanation

I tried watching the show but it was only a small part of it. I didn't understand what he was doing till I read the SCFI.com explanation. I mean what is the point of 'Crossing Over with John Edward'. Is it just to make sure that our friends/family have go to heaven and not hell?

He's simply using an old technique known as cold-reading. You start by sizing the person up (is he well dressed, etc.). You then throw out some vague statements which are more like questions. Then you play on the response given to you by the person being read. The person will be amazed by the accuracy of your statements (forgetting your incorrect statements) and often give you information which you can use to make more vague statements. It also helps to tell people what they want to hear.
