John Connor's new build

So I'm coming from a Q6600. I want to build a system surrounded by an i7 2600k. The motherboard I have chosen is a G1.Sniper M3.

I want to install 32 GB of RAM for use with a RAM drive. What kind of RAM should I chose. I like Crucial.

I'm not sure which is better between these two sticks. I plan on buying one 8GB stick at a time.

The first is 1.5V and the second is 1.35V

Not sure about what heat sink I should get.

If you think I should chose another motherboard please include some facts as to why your pick would be better.

I want a case that is black, has USB 3.0 and a HDD light indicator on the front. I want a mid-size case to fit on my desk. No full towers. This is a micro ATX board.

Don't need a PSU, Video card or HDD. I will use what I have.

I'm looking for suggestions.

I think you mean "around an i7". Otherwise, that would be the largest CPU I ever heard about... 😛

Anyway, here are my two cents:

1) Personally I like Silverstone cases. Like this one:
2) I think the RAM choice depends on whether you will overclock or not.
3) That's a nice motherboard.
When the CPU interconnects are not measure in nanometers but square feet.
 
Why a 2600K? Did you get a deal on a used one?

:thumbsup: At first glance, pairing a nearly 3 year old CPU with a $220 Z77 board doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Also, can you elaborate on your use case for a ramdisk? It most cases, an SSD plus normal filesystem page caching is basically the same thing.

Yeah, I'm on a budget. PC will be used for some gaming and video editing. Yes, i will be overclocking that's why I picked the k version.

Current PSU is an Antec 520. Video card is a GTX 560 TI. HDD is an Adata SSD and a Hitachi 500 GB platter.

Budget around $500. I'm buying the board and CPU on eBay as I can't get that board on Newegg anymore and the CPU is cheaper on eBay than Newegg.

I wonder how many people that seen the title of the thread thought this whould be a great build? LOL. The fact of the matter is John Connor mostly lives off the grid, works odd jobs and doesn't make very much money. But where he lacks in money he makes up in leadership. LOL
 
So you are going to be buying everything new? You're not getting a used 2600K for cheap or anything? What does it cost on eBay?
 
No, the board and CPU I'm buying on eBay. The board will set me back at least $100-$150 and the CPU around $225. The CPU is actually cheaper on eBay.

Question: The case I have chosen says, "5 or 2.5" x 5 Internal 3.5" Drive Bay." So these internal bays can hold a 2.5" dive too I guess? that would be great for my SSD.
 
Yes that means they're compatible with both hard disks and SSD's.

Honestly I'd rather get a new Xeon E3-1230 V3 ($254 on newegg/amazon). While not overclockable, it performs like a 4.0-4.2GHz 2600K while consuming almost half the power. And it will retain its resale value much better than a two generations old used 2600K. Combine with a decent H87 board like Asrock H87 Performance ($100 on newegg/amazon).

Alternatively I'd get a 4670K in combo with a Z87 board and OC that instead. E.g. 4670K + MSI Z87-G45 Gaming $351 AR. You end up paying less than for the 2600K and Z77 board you picked, but you get better <4 threaded performance (which is actually more important when actually gaming and editing videos, not encoding) and not far from the same heavily multithreaded performance (bench). Again, the same argument about resale value and power consumption applies.
 
I know, I took it into account. The Xeon is 3.3Ghz so only 0.2GHz slower, so you can look at the 4770K bench and remove 5%. The difference to a 2600K is still around +15-20% which means it's roughly equal to 2600K at 4.0-4.2 GHz.

Yeah. It isn't multiplier unlocked though. So if you could push the 2600k over 4.2, it would probably outperform that E3. Are you sure that whatever you're doing even benefits from hyperthreading though? Especially if you're gaming, I'd strongly consider one of the combos lehtv mentioned. The only reason I can see for going with SB over Haswell is if you get A LOT of pleasure from the act of achieving a "higher" overclock.

Is that true? I can't use DDR3 1600?
Pretty sure you could use 1600 RAM and run it at 1333. It won't make a big difference in gaming. If it really bothers you, there's another reason for going with the Haswell i5-combo 😛

Here are a couple of good Corsair case deals (the 330R seems like a sick pick!) Especially since after shipping, it's basically the same price as the SilverStone you picked out.

The Carbide 330R is $60, shipped, AR for one more day.

The 300R is $50, shipped, AR also

The 350D is very sleek and compact, but it's a little pricier at $80. $80 seems a little high to me, but YMMV.
 
I might be able to get a good deal on a E3-1230. But I may need to update the BIOS of the MB I would like to get. Can I do that with or without the CPU installed in the board?
 
I'm pretty sure the z77 board you mentioned at the beginning will not support Haswell Xeon's, regardless of bios updates because they use different pin structures. Haswell is socket 1150, z77 supports 1155.
 
Right, that would be the 1230 v2, the Ivy-Bridge Xeon, which is socket 1155.

is a Haswell Xeon, and is socket 1150. It has a physically different pin layout.
 
I know, but it's a haswell i5 vs. sandy i5, the only thing in the mix with SB i7/Haswell Xeon is HT.

Basically, the numbers will be different, but I'd expect similar percentage gains.
