he is not leaving id but his focus now is Oculus

interesting news, Carmack was probably one of the main reasons why Oculus was successful so far, and he has been talking a lot about displays and I/O over the last few years, so it sounds like a great thing.
 
Well with him closing up his space company, he now has some more time to spend on other projects.

He has not left ID, just puts in less time there.
 
From what I learned about John C. back in the 90's, this is a natural fit for someone who dreams of an ever more perfect machine-generated alternate reality.
