Joes plan to end violence is asking congress for half a billion dollars.

No Lifer
He won't get it.

He's used up all his goodwill and political capitol on other things. At this particular time he'll need overwhelming support from the people, so they call their representatives and beg them to vote for such a bill. They will not call on his behalf. Not by the millions, which is what it would take.
But they will spend hundreds of billions on the Department of Defense, which doesn't actually protect the country.

It couldn't be more obvious than, just as liberals are beginning to wish every Trump supporter death by Covid-19, so too does the public generally want every criminal locked away in prison forever, unless, of course, it's white crime type of offender. And because as a result of this equal and opposite reaction to injustice, the creation of what we fear, the people who are most brutally policed are people of color which puts the liberals in a pickle. They want their fascist Trump supporting police to go to jail or at a minimum de-funded and the money handed out to local community benefit and this scares the piss out of the rest of the population. Once the reactionary liberal authoritarian left, radicalized by police brutality, the product of radicalization on the part of the more entitled side of society, scares the shit out of the people whose votes very much matter, billions now have to be spent to clean up the de-fund the police mess in the face of which very few liberals would get elected and is generally just insanity on it's face.

It doesn't really matter what political parties effectively legislate, Republicans don't stand for anything or do anything but block anything liberals want to do, all that matters is what they say they stand for. Thus Democrats need to fund the police to reform them, (I mean, say they want to, wink wink). Politics is all about talking a good game.

Maybe someday the population will awake form sleeping in their beer and do something to turn the country into a real democracy.

So please get out their and fill the streets with protest and call a Constitutional Convention. I'll stay here and guard the keg.

If the programs he saying work really work, I don't see what the l fuss is about. Sounds like good ideas and not a steep price comparatively. Plus, the nuttier than ever GOP can't say hes penalizing "responsible" gun owners

It won't solve the problem (not that anything but a return to morals and personal responsibility would) but it's a shame he decided to burn bridges before trying to accomplish this, as it is at least likely to make cities a little safer for those to choose to be law abiding citizens, if the money is not wasted which it probably will be.

Oh, fuck this guy 🙄
We don't need more police on the streets, we need people who are better-equipped to handle situations that police aren't trained to do, we want police to handle too many kinds of situations.
Defunding the police was never about "abandoning our streets".
We need both more police and better training, AND specialists in certain scenarios. Defunding the police was, to the rabid mobs, very much about abandoning safety on our streets. They were just too stupid to connect the dots of what the result would be.

Certainly some cases need social workers instead. How many will die because the social worker was sent in and did not present a threat of consequences to the deranged criminal? So, we can't use fewer police at all, not defunding but rather additional funding.

Well, when we have more and more guns we will need more and more police. I feel sorry for those guys where it is their duty to clean up the mess. And also the doctors. The NRA has really taken a shit on society and the cops have to clean it up. Its no wonder that any human let alone a cop would develop little tolerance for crime and criminals and start shooting people first and asking question later.

Burn what bridges?

Dishonest misrepresentation with a RWNJ boogeyman...nice Taj you pulled there. Projecting your own fear is obvious.

mindless = thinking cops are the solution to crime

Yes, enforcing laws requires sufficient police to do so, but that doesn't mean employ people who are psychologically unfit to police which IMO has been happening.

If the majority of society wants to repeal laws or reduce their penalties, there's that too but as long as the law exists, should be enforced at a rate sufficient to decrease it, and bring justice to those harmed.

The solution to too many guns is more guns in the hands of people who keep performing extrajudicial executions, got it.

It's not fear to want police to keep businesses from burning down or keep society peaceful and more functional by limiting the abilities of criminals to cause harm. Frankly I fear more for you, being a consumer of drugs, and other compromised individuals in society that are easier prey for criminals.

Well there's a solution for that, but you probably wouldn't approve.

Odd it was the lack of properly trained police work that caused people to protest their practices.

well any time the democrats try to make America a better place so we dont need cops the fuckin republicans attack them like rabid wolves.
Moving step by step towards communism isn't a better place except for the lower class members of a society, and ends up dragging more and more of the middle class down.

We'll always need police. There will always be those who choose to break the law seeking an unearned advantage or just having general disregard for others.

As far as republicans attacking democrats, it is pretty clear that it was the other way around for several years that Trump was in office. I do agree that the attacks need to stop On Both Sides.

Making America a better place would be preserving freedoms while holding individuals accountable, minimal government intervention to do so, but always enough to do so.

If society wants to repeal laws, that's how it should work, then the laws that remain are fully enforced.

It's not odd at all, rather a clear sign we need higher standards for police recruiting, to filter out the bad apples, and also hold police personally accountable to an even higher standard than we should everyone else.

At the same time, just stating "people" is a misleading argument. Better put it is a small minority of people who protested. Anyone with common sense wanted nothing to do with that mob, knew it was trouble not a solution.

Repealing laws are nearly impossible.

I thought how duplicitously exploitive the Repubs were when they pounced on the "defund the police" meme while leaving out the part explaining how those recovered funds would be better used to benefit the community from whence the funds were derived.

I felt somewhat relieved when Biden made clear that both he and NYC's mayor did not support in any way what the Repubs were making out of that meme.
