(AP) STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Former Penn State coach Joe Paterno has a treatable form of lung cancer, according to his son.
Scott Paterno says in a statement provided to The Associated Press by a family representative that the 84-year-old Joe Paterno is undergoing treatment and that "his doctors are optimistic he will make a full recovery."

The news comes as the NCAA told Penn State it will examine how school officials handled a child sex abuse scandal that has shocked the campus and cost Paterno his job.

Paterno, Division I's winningest coach with 409 victories, was fired by university trustees Nov. 9, the same night then-president Graham Spanier also left his job under pressure. School leaders faced mounting criticism that more should have done to prevent the alleged abuse.

I wouldn't be surprised if he just found this out himself. I'd guess he went in related to stress regarding this whole ordeal and found out this way. Seems a bit strange otherwise mentioning he has cancer now.

I might have cared. But then I found out he allowed a child molester to practice his trade unhindered.

If this is really a "deeply personal" matter for the family, his son wouldn't have come out and announced this to the world.

It's a sympathy ploy to make people forget about the events of the past two weeks, nothing more. And if I'm a dick for suggesting that, then I'm a dick.

Wouldn't it be ironic if this issue was the reason that caused him stress, which caused him to go to the doctor? Thus, by not being more aggressive against the sexual abuse, he ends up getting to live a little longer. Perhaps if this incident didn't occur, the cancer wouldn't have been discovered until it was too late to treat it.

Had he dealt with the sexual abuse issue years ago, it could have ultimately shortened his life.

Having lung cancer is a sympathy ploy? It's joe Paterno, people would have talked, jay just wanted to get it out and acknowledged.

I don't go around telling the world about my "deeply personal" matters.

Assuming the cancer is treatable as his son indicates, let him get treatment and no one aside from his doctors and those close to him would ever need to know about it regardless of how in the spotlight he is. Let the masses speculate all they want--that's unavoidable given his status.
