Joe was a boss. A great ambassador of his sport, and hit like a god damned truck. There is a chair at Crom's table for Joe.

I rooted for Frazier against Ali.

Here's a nice documentary on the Thrilla In Manilla.

Same, hated Ali with all his antics, it was a circus. Lived about 2 miles from where the fight was held Oct 1975, was turning 18th in 6 weeks and just started college. Had to listen to the radio during the fight, couldn't afford the ticket. The rest is history.

A few years ago, smoking Joe revealed that he was essentially blind in his left eye throughout his boxing career.

They just told Ali that Frazier had died and all he could do was shake his head. Then shake his feet, his arms, his hands......................

Did I watch a movie about this guy? Or wasn't his life story a major part of some documentary? About how he lost all his money etc. Must not have been very memorable.

RIP

espn had an excellent documentary a few years ago. i'm sure it'll be on again soon.

Just watched "Thrilla in Manila" on HBO. Good 90 minute documentary.

Like I mentioned earlier, Smokin' Joe had only 1 good eye (right). He had partial vision in the left since 1964 from a boxing accident. So at the end of the fight, he was virtually fighting blind since his right eye was swollen, thus the stoppage.
