Joe Biden tells coal miners they can "learn how to program"

During a rally yesterday, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden spoke to a crowd in Derry, N.H., a town that many miners call home. He acknowledged the economic setbacks and job insecurity that coal miners face these days, and gave them some advice: learn to code.

According to Dave Weigel of the Washington Post, Biden said, “Anybody who can go down 3,000 feet in a mine can sure as hell learn to program as well... Anybody who can throw coal into a furnace can learn how to program, for God’s sake!”

According to Weigel, the comment was met with silence from the audience.

The Hill's Saager Enjeti furthers rips him saying he is already making the same mistakes Clinton made in 2016:

“His answer belies the utter contempt for the dignity of real work in this country and it buys into a false narrative that coding is the highest achievement that one can have in America,” Enjeti said.

How stupid can one get? Biden must think he's as bulletproof a candidate as Hillary because he just insulted most of the Rust Belt battleground states. If this guy wins the nomination Trump will use this comment for ammo at every Rust Belt rally.

Yes, let's discuss coal mining, please. Those 70K jobs which used to be over 1 million but the vast majority were eliminated by automation. And why Trump is pandering to this tiny segment of the American work force who have been irrationally elevated by the right as somehow more significant than any other tiny portion of our work force.

Biden is essentially right, but it came across weird because he used a singular example of coding. He should have just said, look, if you can learn to move three thousand feet under ground, there's lot of other things you can learn as well.

Like how to make solar panels on an assembly line.

He should do like Trump and make empty promises about coal jobs coming back?
They actually increased when Trump took office. Look at the pretty little graph in this article. Obama is the reason coal jobs left.
https://www.cnbc.com/2019/03/08/coal-mining-jobs-are-holding-steady-under-trumps-watch.html

Also Trump removed many of the idiotic coal regulations that obama installed which will take time to take full effect. It'd also be nice if Trump created more incentive for clean coal investment considering we have 27% of the world's coal with the next closest country at 17%. Coal is only "bad" b/c there isn't investment in tech to make dirty coal cleaner.

Either way Biden wins moron of the year for telling coal miners to learn to code. Guy needs to just retire to a nursing home where they can wipe his arse for him. He is on track to be a worse candidate than Hillary.

What Biden should really do is lie to them a whole bunch about how he’s going to make everything better and then be a complete and utter failure at it, dragging the country down too.

If I were Joe Biden I would point this out at every Rust Belt rally. Remember, Trump isn’t just a liar, he’s totally incompetent too - a total failure.

Are you saying coal miners have lower learning ability than elementary school students? Cuz the kids are learning coding now.

You think coal miners are going to respond better to Trump telling them he removed regulations on coal ie fighting for their industry (and shows them that jobs actually went up after obama left) vs Biden telling them to make solar panels on an assembly line? What world are you living in to think that a Rust Belt strategy like that will work?

The rust belt is primarily manufacturing, not coal mining, and the coal sector overall is tiny.

What I think people in the rust belt will respond to is Biden telling them reality - Trump lied to them and then his tariffs made things worse and cost them and their families their jobs.

So Obama was why coal jobs have been getting killed off for decades? Nice.

My point was not necessarily specific to coal but to blue collar jobs in the Rust Belt. Trump can use Biden's comment to apply to any blue collar job with the correct framing. "Look what sleepy Joe is telling working class folk, that they should learn to code! What world is this guy living in? We will fight for your jobs and by the time I'm done, you'll have your choice of a [insert job type here like manufacturing, coal mining] job!"

Sure, and then Biden can just point out that Trump lied to them and said he was going to fix everything, only to then cost them their jobs with his dumb policies.

Doesn’t get much easier than that. If I were Biden I would be tap dancing all over the rust belt with one simple message: Trump cost you guys jobs.

Biden told coal miners the hard truth. They are going to have to change industries.
That's fine, but he doesn't have to tell them that publicly let alone tell them to learn to code. That's incredibly insulting and as stupid as hillary calling half the country deplorables. He could've just said, "I'll fight for new jobs in your area so you'll always have employment". He doesn't have to specify the type of job and if someone asked about coal, he could say "I may not be able to save all of your jobs but I'll be bringing in new ones in manufacturing" . But then again that's how unpolished Biden is. You'd think after 40 years in politics he'd learn how to talk.

You’re right, someday maybe he can be as coherent as the guy you support. Here’s him speaking eloquently on wind turbines:

I never understood wind, you know I know windmills very much. I’ve studied it better than anybody...

But they’re manufactured...tremendous if you’re into this, tremendous fumes. Gases are spewing into the atmosphere. You know we have a world, right? So the world is tiny compared to the universe. So tremendous, tremendous amount of fumes and everything.

Lol. Which side do you come down on, Team Trump is That Stupid or Team Degenerative Brain Disorder?

No he didn't. They will never take effect, because they will never get past the courts. The EPA actually has to meet a standard of scientific relevance to change regulations like this. The Trump EPA will never meet these standards, and most of Trump's bullshit has been rejected already. Nothing will actually change in this regard with Trump, because it is just empty grist for braindead simpletons.

Either you actually understand this and are just lying, or are really fucking stupid to believe something that is plainly, observably, false.

Coal is a blue collar job. Hillary saying she's going to kill coal was very symbolic and used against her in multiple states. Now Sleepy Joe is making the same mistake.

no one wants coal. Those jobs were gone before Trump, and they ain't coming back. Why do you hate capitalism so much? Why do you want welfare for noncompatetiive, obsolete trash objects?

why are you such a fucking communist to support these garbage, noncompetitive, trash jobs that harvest a product that literally no one wants?

While Speedy certainly has no problem lying on here in this case I imagine he’s like most Trumpkins and thinks those regulations have actually been repealed when in reality Trump has lost in court on them over and over again.

Cost which jobs specifically? Manufacturing is up over 600k since obama and our economy is the best we've ever seen. Places like Wisconsin have a job DEFICIT around 200,000 because they can't find enough people to work.

Nationally there are more open jobs than workers, the first time this has ever happened since we started tracking it 20 years ago:

For nearly a year now, the number of open jobs each month has been higher than the number of people looking for work — the first time that’s happened since the Department of Labor began tracking job turnover two decades ago.

At the end of January, the US economy had 7.6 million unfilled jobs, but only 6.5 million people were looking for work, according to data released Friday by the US Department of Labor. This was the 11th straight month that the number of job openings was higher than the number of job seekers. And each month, the gap has grown.

Just look at the chart below. For two decades, there have been more available workers than available jobs. That changed last year.

and

The US economy doesn’t have enough workers.

For a record 16 straight months, the number of open jobs has been higher than the number of people looking for work. The US economy had 7.4 million job openings in June, but only 6 million people were looking for work, according to data released by the US Department of Labor.

Short of the tech boom this is best economy we've ever seen in our lifetimes, good luck trying to tell the Rust Belt (like Wisconsin) Trump lost them jobs. Michigan? New 1.5billion dollar Ford plant in Detroit. Ohio? The new "electric car manufacturing hub".
