Jocks vs Nerds... Does this rivalry still exist?

I got done watching Revenge of the Nerds

So do the jocks still pick on the nerds or has this changed? The movie came out in the mid 80's so I know a lot has changed since then. When I went to highschool, the jocks did pick on the nerds to some extent. It wasn't that bad but I do remember a few instances.

For one, there was this kid named Albert Pinkerton. He weighed all of 130 lbs, had a bowl shapped haircut and finger nails longer then most of the girls in my highschool. He loved Prince and would wear his purple rain tee shirt every damn day. Or thats what it seemed. He crossed his legs when he was in class. He was kinda nerdy.

Well we had this one punk in his class named Tony. Tony was a jock/punk and liked to pick on people. He thought he was a lady's man as well. He was tall, good looking and built pretty solid. He lifted weights and was toned. Girls liked this guy.

I remember one day that Tony came into class and started to immediately pick on Albert. Albert didn't say much but Tony kept heckling him... "look at the nerd" "Hey nerd, Prince sucks." Etc... It kept going on for at least 5 minutes. Btw... the teacher was out of the class for 10 minutes so a fellow student oversaw her classroom.

Well.. the next thing I know I hear a WHAM! Tony wacked Albert in the back of the head with a big thick history book and started yelling "YOU LOOK AT ME WHEN I'M TALKING TO YOU. YOU HEAR ME NERD?" Then he started chanting "nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd" etc....

Albert was crying like a little girl. I'll admit.... I thought it was funny at the time. Of course I'm much different now, so please don't judge me for how I was 17 yrs ago.

So does this stuff still exist? Do the jocks still pick on the nerds or has this changed?

You have described a homosexual, not a nerd.

It happened when I was in high school. This was six years ago.

It will ALWAYS happen. If you think it doesn't happen, then you just aren't around to see it.

well I'm sorry the real-life crap that happens doesn't mirror the funny stuff in the movies. But those two fuknuts did say that being picked on by jocks was what set them off...

Anyway, point was that nerds can be just as malicious and then some...

I'm sure it's never going to change. I got picked on mercilessly in school for being the nerd with glasses, hearing aids and a bowl cut. The jocks and the popular people were the main perpetrators. I spent years after I got out of high school just trying to learn the social skills I didn't pick up in school because I was too busy trying to avoid being bullied.

Fortunately, I've managed to develop into a reasonably well-adjusted adult with a loving wife and a reasonably bright future, instead of a bitter loner who spends all his free time cleaning his guns and wanking to porn. :D

not at my school...at least, not bad. Everytime a jock picked on a nerd, the nerd usually said something to the tune of "pick on me now, cause you will be cleaning my business bathrooms later." I have yet to see a full blown jock when any sort of arguement with a nerd, so it stopped there.

And whats wrong with being a bitter loner who wacks off to porn and has an extensive gun collection?

it still happens, but i doubt its as serious as that anymore. at my school, we dont have a thick seperation between the nerds and the jocks in respect or anything. sure, the jocks do get the girls and they often times do pick on nerds, but its not really bad. they would usually get along fine.

it doesnt matter much though. the jocks get the upper hand in high school, but anything after that, they are useless and left in the dust by the nerds who end up making 10x more and living it up. *shrug*

Ah.. but is that still the case? It was in the 90's, but ever since the dot com bust it's a different story. And since all the IT jobs are being shipped to India can a nerd still claim that his wealth will be made in the computer field?

when i say nerd, i dont necessarily mean the tech type of nerd. ive always view nerds at school as book-worm type people. they study hard in class, they do their work, they score well on tests. they end up attending great higher education and then work a good job. not necesarrily in the tech industry, ive known nerds to become doctors/lawyers/scientist/business etc. etc. jocks on the other hand, (this is only generally speaking imo) are less focused on school work and take more importance in social+ sports and elsewhere.

nowadays, like i said, theres not much of a rigid seperatio anymore. in school, there are still the devoted nerds and hardcore jocks, but things are much more balanced out. many of my friends are doing excellent in class and also excelling on the football team. i for one, am at the head of my honor classes, and also play for the basketball team. im second string, but thats okay. i run track, and the previous season i was the fastest on frosh/soph for 100m.

i personally dont think the rivalry exists anymore. its different now. you still got the jocks+nerds, but you dont see too much conflict going on. just the occasional bump in the hallway. nasty exchange of words here and there. nothing big.

I don't see much of that anymore... where I live, I think that was more of a middle school thing and now in High School, the rivalry isn't really there.
