Job Test/Initial Interview in So. CA

I recently graduated from college and am looking for a job. I got a response back from a job in Santa Ana, CA (Orange County, East of Huntington Beach) to come out for their second phase screening which consists of an exam and a short initial interview. Those who pass that will be called back for a more in-depth oral exam the next day. The exam/interview is next week Monday (April 2), and the call back would be the next day. Is it worth spending about $600 to fly out to California (I am currently in Milwaukee, WI) for this? I would love to live in that area and the job pays relatively well, but I have a lot of other job applications out.
 
If they don't pay to fly you out and pay for all your expenses, it is not a company you should work for.

That's just ridiculous.

Yeah, you shouldn't have to pay for travel if they want you to come out and interview.
 
Yep, the company should be paying for this. The only reason they wouldn't is if it states local candidates only.
 
There was nothing about local candidates only in the reply I received, so I will definetly make some phone calls about them paying for this. Thanks.
 
So how many of you who posted have participated in a initial job interview where the company paid for your travel expenses?? or do you really have no clue how initial job interviews are conducted?

I've had 5 initial job interviews over the past few years and every single one of them was covered fully.

i don't think that just because they are unwilling to pay for your expenses that they are a bad company...

op it's up to you how much this job is worth to you (i'm sure long-term it would be well worth it)

My suspicion is that it depends on the industry and position.

My only out of state initial job interview put me up in a hotel and gave me meal vouchers. They offered to fly me down to them, too, but it was only a 4 hour drive, so I stopped and saw some of my out of state friends on the way back home. They reimbursed me for the mileage, too.
