Job Security

With the decline of jobs (at least in my area) - do you feel like your present job is secure or are you afraid of getting the pink slip soon?

As for my job at the present it's secured. Of course that doesn't mean it won't changed further into the year. If so I'll just take a long needed vacation. 🙂

I'm pretty secured with my job.

Right now we are working on 10 year project for the US government.

Of course, things could change, but for right now, it's all good.

I'm relatively secure, been here over three years. I'm not at all worried about losing my job. I almost wish they would lay me off, though, I could use the pressure to find a different job.

I'm constnatly in fear of it and have been for a long time. Month to month I could get a pink slip. I've just grown used to the fact because the anxiety was killing me. Advice to young people thinking about careers: Don't choose IT.

EDIT: Now that mrsskoorb is finally able to work and would make almost enough to let us break even month to month if I was at home the stress has diminished a good bit.

Whatever feeling of security I had, it's gone today after this morning's impromptu meeting my boss held with my group. I'm not jobless now, but man.... I may need to start looking.

Its nice haveing a sugar momma isn't it 🙂

I could get fired considering the product I work on has been canceled. But then again, my manager and his manager are both trying to find ways to keep me working for them rather than transfer to a different group. So I don't know.

I make a point of hording important information that now one else knows. It makes my job much more secure.

Sadly I think that is necessary too. Of course it's also important to let others know that you know this important information 🙂

I though my job was secure for at least another year. That is until 20% of the company got laid off before Xmas, and my department got complete out sourced (didn't see that one coming). 🙁 Oh well...

For a long few months, it was looking pretty bleek (sp?) but after a few HUGE signings our company just made... it's looking great for us now.

I was laid off at a highly unsecure job in the telecoms industry last June. I knew it was coming because of all the lay-offs prior to mine...I stuck with it as long as I could because I wasn't sure if I would be able to find a job with similar pay and benefits. Very important since my wife and I just had a baby. I got my severance check and found a highly secure job in three months for the dominant company in an industry that is pretty well insulated from the effects of recessions. I consider myself highly lucky!

LOL! Read my first post. I JUST got a call from my boss and it started with "I got some bad news today". I knew what that meant. Thankfully he followed up with "It doesn't affect you, but". So anyway there was a round of layoffs. Since they go in chunks and I missed this one I'm good for a bit, plus my boss likes me and I'm the only one in birmingham where my company has been trying to get more business.

I figure I'm good at least until July. If I make it past July of this year, then I'm good til July 2004...

mine is ok... i am the only one doing this part of the job in my company... no one else will (pussies 😛) so i am OK!

That's the best way to do it during a downturn. Be the only in a certain area and have all the critical knowledge. Unfortunately, there were two of us at my last job and I made more money than my co-worker. So, I got the axe first.

I have a friend who was laid off from his job and then went to his boss and outlined everything he knew and his relation with the clients and asked who would be able to replace all that. They re-hired him on the spot and he got a generous contract that included 3 months notice if he was to be laid off again and a huge agreed upon severance package when it did happen.

I felt pretty unsecure this past Fall ... and sure enough, I received my pink slip - along with a nice severance package. However, I am now very happy. I'm taking plenty of time to build security into my next venture which will more than likely be a combination of various things. No longer will I put 100% faith in the company or corporation that I work for.

Just some "food for thought": I've picked up some home-based business magaizines over the past few months from my local newstand. Some of the advertisments in these magazines are quite silly. 3/4 of the proposed work, I would never consider doing. However, the articles in the magazines are usually invaluable. The articles give lots of great instruction on making a great set of presentation materials for the type of business that you will be doing. I really like reading stuff like this.

I( feel pretty secure. I work at a Bread Plant in a good location in comparison to our other plants coverage area...bread sells good even in not so good economic times.
