But srsly, in this economy, do you truly "feel" safe?

I went to McD's today because of that thread, and got a McDouble w/o mustard+pickle. They're right, it taste better w/o all that cheese. Paid in drive thru, went to the 2nd window (pickup counter) and saw an old guy, probably around 60-65, handing me my food. Was thinking to myself, "could it be that bad out there?" (This was in a relatively well-off neighborhood)

I work for a war profiteer, so my job is secure as long as people continue to slaughter each other.

A lot of older people work because they want to have something meaningful to do and supplement their retirement income at the same time.

I can do my boss's job just as good and for less money and my boss's boss knows it, so I'd like to think that my boss would be fired before me.

My industry is facing some tough economic times right now, but I am fairly certain they are only temporary. Plus, my company is the largest public company in the world and is sitting on a sizable amount of cash & stock, and its cash is greater than its debt. So, I'm fairly confident in my job security.

Company owner, so technically I'll always have a job. The question is whether or not that job will produce an income, and thus far we've actually been growing in this economy. We went through a tough few months last year, but the worst is over (for us, for now) and we're picking up a lot of the pieces that were left over.

Worst case scenario, I'm 100% confident that I have security one way or another. I don't believe in job security, and though it might be cliche to say this, I think the only security you have is your ability to get another job. For this purpose, your network is your guide.

Honestly, I can't even tell the economy's gone to shit. We've been busier than hell. All the techs have been averaging about 50+ hours a week. We're starting to slow down a bit now but that's normal for Jan/Feb. I'm with a telecom company in Oklahoma. OK seems to be the most recession resistant state.

So I vote yes... for the moment

I work for a luxury item manufacturer. Honestly worried this time next year I may be out of work. 2009 is going to be utterly terrible.

My company has made changes to try and avoid layoffs. That being said, I have a feeling the layoffs are coming soon.

There is no such thing.
In the New World Or... er.. EConomy, Labor is a cost to be minimized, not an asset to be managed.
Workplace innovation is no longer valued, as it once was, as we've moved away from a manufacturing to a service based economy.

We're doomed. :( Unless you want to be a prison guard, or work for Private Prison Industry, there is no such thing as "job security".

Actually, that would be a "security job".

Government job I'm assuming?

I don't feel like I have much job security, but not because of the economy. Because I'm a draftsman

My company got rid of two people that needed to go.. Otherwise we're looking to hire..

I honestly don't know how my company would replace me or how they'd even find someone to handle everything I do.. so I'm not worried. I think I could easily grab another job at this point.. though I would have to move out of state most likely.

I'm happy where I am. :D

industrial automation, btw

I work in telecom, so every morning when I use my key card to get into the building its an exciting moment waiting for the indicator to turn green.

We are usually looking for a right person or two. I'm in a pretty steady field with a secure job.

No job right now. I'm going to school for Graphic Design and I'm very concerned about how the job market is going to look when I graduate in 2.5 years.
