Well, this is the situation guys. I got a call last week for a Systems Engineer/IT internship. Went for the interview, they want me. I would be doing support on Unix, Solaris, Windows systems and also doing support for government projects in other facilites. I would get top secret clearance. Here is the offer:

$15 dollars an hour starting, cell phone, milage and other expenses paid for when working.

Right now, I'm a Network Tech at my university for one of the departments. I only make 10 bucks an hour, but I don't have to do any commuting, I just drive a couple minutes from my apartment to campus then I can leave work and walk to class.

The new job I would be driving about 47 miles EACH way, that's a good 45 to 50 minute drive. There's nothing wrong with my job right now, it kicks ass. But here is an opportunity where I would learn a hell of a lot more things. For example, we only have Windows-based systems here at my current job. I would be gaining experience on Unix and Solaris, which I have minimal skills at.

Plus, this is a position that will turn into a full time job after I graduate. The three IT guys that interviewed me were all interns and all turned into full time positions and told me this would if I chose to stay. Yet, I have about two more years of school before I get my IT degree.

So what do you guys think? Should I take it and just do the driving? I really don't mind the driving, it's not a hard drive at all. But I'm thinking about the time issue and how much money I'd be paying for gas. Thanks for the comments!

Do it. Working on campus is great and all, but won't look as good on your resume as working for an outside company. (although I do recognize that the campus job could in theory at least be more challenging)

er, if it will get you security clearance..

top secret is such a bitch to get.

Id talk to you about it, but they will probably find this thread as they do checks on you. (Edit:: The Eagle Flies At Midnight!) :)

Suffice to say, its hard to get (1-1.5 year backlog) unless you have a company sponsoring you... and for an extra $5 an hour, you have to commute a few bucks more.. It would be good, especially if later you would be able to move closer.

I'd take the job in a heartbeat. If you get the spot, you'll get more experience under your belt and you can take that and get a nicer job a few years down the road.

Definitely worth it. The experience alone will land you an excellent job after college. Do it!

Some kind of clearance. Who knows, I'd be working on military projects I think...I guess I'll find out.

Hrmm.. that's a tough call really. Both jobs sound good for their own reasons, whether it be more money at one or more convenience/time at the other. You know you like your current job and don't know if you'll like the new one. Don't forget that, despite what some extreme left will say, the economy is coming back. Jobs aren't going to be as hard to find as they have been for the last couple of years, so you might be able to find something closer.

Now, if you don't see there EVER being jobs that are much closer then I'd definately take the new one.

No brainer - take it. Commute is something you will need to get used to at some point, and you'll be making more money with better job experience/growth.

Yea, but I'm in Orlando and all of the good jobs are over there by Cocoa Beach/Kennedy Space Center/Patrick Airforce Base. Sooner or later, I knew I was going to have to go there. Plus, I'm really thinking of all of the experience I'm going to be recieving.

I'm gonna take it I think. :)

any job that would give a intern a clearance is worth it imo. I would jump on that in a heartbeat, even if they only paid me $10 an hour.

Just take the $15....You're in college, not a graduate looking to buy a house! 15 is plenty for beer! :)

Take it. It's a real job, compared to the campus one, which doesn't really count in the real world.
