Trying to figure out whether I should give up my steady job, after just moving from south jersey to north jersey, to just up and move to the Boston area for a great job offer.

Comments? Suggestions? Is Boston OK for the 23 year old out of college crowd?

Pay at steady job? Pay at new job?

Cost of living in current city? Cost of living in Boston?

Keep in mind:
Boston Area Rent: 1 BR ~ $1100-$2800 per month
2BR ~ $1300-$3800 per month

etc.

I make about 22k$ in Stipend and barely make it financially. If you want to be financially secure, make car payments, buy house etc. You want a salary of no less than 50k$ here. Preferably 65k$ minimum.

Otherwise, its a great city, tons of stuff to do, many different cultures, nice museums, a great selection of cuisine, shopping etc.

You'll fit right in. Lots of colleges in the area with lots of students and recent grads. You can survive no matter how much you make. It just depends on where you want to live. If you don't mind a roommate (or more) you can probably just pay $600 rent in a decent area.

Boston is amazing for that crowd. Almost the entire city is that age.

If you are concerned about the cost of living you can live just outside the city, still be near a subway line and pay like 800 bucks for a 1bd.

I am in a similar situation - actually a lot similar. Only difference is I went to school in Boston for 4 years.

I'm 22, live in NJ, loved Boston so much I'm considering moving back there.

My logic is as follows: if I can find a job that will pay me ~10-20K more/year than what I make now then it is definitely worth it, as I can keep saving what I do now and still afford rent/expenses. Currently I still live at home. Rent in the area can run anywhere from ~700/month (with roommate(s)) to over 2000.

Boston is a great city for people our age - it's essentially run by people ages 20-25.

Also depends on what you do, where you live, if you want a car there, etc, etc.

Well I like really nice quiet places to live. As in, I won't have neighbors blaring stereos at 3 am in the morning. My friend recommended brookline.

Why do you keep bumping this and not answering the questions? People need more information on your current situation!

Dude, I hate New Jersey. That's why I want out. Would you want a room mate? Are you more of a quiet person or do you tend to like loud stereo, etc.?

I moved from Philly to CT for a job that paid about about 100% more for a contract position. I was there about 2.25 years before I took a permanent job up in CT last November. I'd go for it.

OK.

Current job is stable. Its in New Jersey. They currently have a hiring freeze so who knows for the future. I recently graduated College in south jersey, moved to North Jersey, and I hate it. I hate the traffic, and I don't like the people. And I don't really get along with people here.

Side track to Boston. Been there 50 times, I have friends there, I love the people there (everyone is nice from my experience, or most people), lots of people from all over the country, and I won't have to drive to work if I live in the right area.

new Job offer is a 15% raise from my current job after cost of living increase. However, it is a start up, so it could fail. But I know jobs in boston are hot for IT guys.

Good info?

Works for me. Almost sounds like a "can't lose" situation except for the bit about it being a start-up company. Although like you said, they are hot for IT so if it does fail you should have no problem finding something else.

I'd take it. I've had a few offers from Boston in the six figures for short term contracts, so you would be okay if things took a bad turn with the start-up.

I went to school in Boston and lived there for 5 years and loved it. It's a small city, easy to get around, a lot to do, lots of people, which is why I went to college there. But working there didn't interest me much because Boston has horrible pay for its cost of living. I make more and pay less where I live in NY now.

If you don't want to live in a crappy area, and don't want to drive to work you're going to pay $1600 a month for a 1br.

I'm graduating in May, and I'm planning on going to Boston. I'm from NE and like NE, but Maine doesn't have enough tech stuff or night life for this stage in my life. So I plan to go to Boston, find some IT job, play the corporate game for a while, and enjoy a big city. I don't plan on taking under 55k in Boston, I have done a budget and if I want to live respectably, and be able to invest in the future I need that much.

After the two recent police (over-re)actions, I think less favorably of Boston.
