So I'm going to Irvine to continue my job as a instrumentation and control engineer (plus some power stuff). Today, I just got a call from a company that does fabrication processes for semiconductors etc... It sounds pretty tempting and involves quite a bit of travel (about 20%) overseas to europe and asia (germany, japan..etc). This is kind of what I want to get my feet into and I am a week away from starting the job in Irvine.. The fab company that gave me the offer told me to call them back if irvine doesn't work out....

How should I go about this. I could work in San Jose again and be near family + friends. Be in the industry that I intended and TRAVEL!

Irvine has been good to me and i have friends there too and the industry is alright (stable). Damn, life decisions.

Do it and say you're sorry to your company. Make new friends. Easy solution.

Don't know if it is the same pay, I'm almost 100% certain that the pay will either be more or equal. I just kind of told them I already had something lined up since July... (I gave them my resume in May and they never called me back until now which is August)

I am a noob I&C Engineer (you have to know power stuff to do it), but I travel ALOT. Heck...I had to go accross country my 3rd week on the job. that said, I think the job is boring when traveling is over....but nothing can beat its job security. If i found a job as say.... a power electronics engineer, I would definately jump if the pay was good enough, but I would always worry about job security.

Wait, you actually want to travel? My work generally has to beg people to do it.

Word, I just feel like a jackass jumping my job when my boss gave me a good opportunity. I would probably have jumped on this job if it were offered to me earlier. Plus i'm already commited down south (have a place with a 1 year lease...etc). Damn...shows me that I'm not ready to settle on this career even for it's stability. have you guys ever jumped ship like this before?

You can always call up the fab company and say you'd like to learn more. Say that the situation with your other company has changed and you're contemplating changing your plans. Find out the amount they are offering.

My wife did this. She accepted a job offer as a staff accountant, and then was approached by another company for a senior regional accountant position. She took the second job, and called the first and apologized for having to decline.

Damn, I wish mine did that. What sucks for the socal job is, I'm already away from the family and friends. If i traveled that would be another barrier. With the fab company, I'd be near them but at the same time get to explore. Gah, definitely call them tomorrow to find out more to see if I like it. Right now, they just gave me the basics so I might be getting hyped up for nothing.

Let's say I do start my new job (it's next monday), how would you guys go about quitting and possibly, not pissing anyone off besides just apologizing. Kind of like the steps. They've been counting on me and spending time training me sooo yeah...lots of expectations for me.

That's what I thought =(. Entirely diff industry though...so would just not use the last company as a reference. Or is there more to it than I think?

you never know who's going to be the HR for your next dream job 2 years down the road. maybe it'll be the same guy who you'll piss off next week.

if it's for a supermarket job, i say F it. you have to act professionally.

Don't know, but my company is a competitor to yours, but we ar eonly 600 people big, so reponsibility comes fast. The expectations are high of me, but frankly, I think I have realy dissapointed. That said, I can't me see myself doing this job that much longer. I have no idea how i am gonna break this news to them in 6 months. Especially since the guy who hired me really wanted me to join badly.

You are gonna piss people off, but you have to just let them know that you think the career path is a much better fit. If they are professional enough, they will be a little annoyed, but they will fully understand and support your decision. However, that is in a perfect world.

You have not yet started so the company you accepted has not yet invested anything in you. They still have a pile of resumes on their desk with their #2 choice right underneath yours. Talk to them both, tell them both you have another offer. See which company wants you more.

According to who? If you politely decline prior to your start date it's just business.

im saying, if this is a meaningless job, then you can blow it off all you want.

if it has anything to do with your field, then there's no way you can back out once you accepted an offer.

The problem is, I don't think I can figure much out until after my start date =(. I start next monday, they barely gave me any info today and asked if I was interested. I need to find out if there is more to it....(interviews, etc). I would probably be given a final job offer in the next coming month from the fab company if I go through with it. This means that I would probably be bailing out after working a couple of months at my job in irvine.
