If you have no idea what they mean, then your answer should be: "Not so hot"

thats basically what i said. i take it to mean configuring routers\switches and like wan type stuff.

i mean, i know how to troubleshoot connectivity issues within the LAN and maybe to where the the connectivity stops to the outside.

What position?

tech support

then all they want to know is if you can type out 'ifconfig' and "ipconfig" :p

Also if you get the question "in which situation would you need to go to the device manager?" Realize that the "device manager" is not an actual person working for the company. :p

I forget who had used that in an interview but the way it was worded made it sound like it was an actual, manager. :p I was not the one who got that question though. I'm pretty sure I would of known it was the actual device manager in windows.

Oh, and never do ipconfig /renew while remoted into someone's machine, or try to disable and enable the nic. Not that I've ever done that, but I've seen it happen. Ok, so I did disable the nic by accident once, I right clicked to go properties but due to slow connection the click actually went to disable. That sucked.

sometimes i get confused by things too, like they'll ask a question about something and i'll not understand what they mean and i'll answer that i don't know, but then i realize that i did know what they meant, i just used a different term for it or maybe i didn't know the term at all, but actually did know how to do what they asked.

Yeah, missed opportunities during interviews can be detrimental. On a question like that they should have (IMO) been more specific. Don't be afraid to ask for some clarification or an example.

This is very important.

If you don't understand have them clarify or give them an example of it that you know and branch out from there.

If you know then give them an example. Examples are what the interviewers want. They don't care if you know this or that, they want examples of how you know it and example of your 'working knowledge'. Not stuff you wrote down on your cv that says you know this.

yeah, i'll just have to ask next time. i'm usually pretty nervous in interviews, although this last one wasn't so bad. I guess it just depends on the interviewers and how the come off. The people in this one were relaxed and nice, they joked a bit, etc, so it made for a more relaxing environment.

I've been lucky (or maybe unlucky, depending on how you see it) in that i haven't had to do too many interviews. I've done maybe or 6 job interviews in my entire life and have had 3 jobs, so i haven't had much practice.
