Job help needed

So I've been wanting to leave my job for a while now, but we were so understaffed that I felt that it was best to wait a little while before leaving, so as to not totally screw over the guys that were still there. I get along well with everybody there, and we're all pretty good friends, so I didn't just want to leave them hanging. After some advertising of my own, we hired up enough people that I'm ready to go. I interviewed with a company on Monday, and they called me back today for another round, and afterwards told me that I had the job if I wanted it.

The catch is that there's some training involved (company specific information I'd need), and the classes they have only happen every other week. So I can either start on Monday the 30th, or Monday the 14th of May. I was hoping to give my notice tonight, and start on the 7th at the new job, giving a week and a half to my current employer.

So my dilemma is this: Do I give my notice tonight for only 3 days, and start new job on Monday, or give notice for the next available date, the 14th. I'm not having a terrible wonderful time at my current job, it's physically and mentally exhausting, for not that great pay and a lot of crap that gets loaded onto us. I could also wait until Monday or next Wednesday to give my notice, but a few guys at work already know I'm leaving, it may come out to management, and I'd rather they hear it from me than from a rumor.

Which option is best?

A - Give notice tonight (Wednesday), that my last day is this Friday, and start new job on Monday. Keep in mind that I'm friends with most of the people at work, and I'd like to leave on good terms.

B - Give notice tonight (Wednesday), that my last day will be next Friday (May 4th), and take a week off before starting new job on the 14th.

C - Give notice tonight (Wednesday), that my last day will be Friday the 11th of May, and start the following Monday at the new job.

D - Wait until next Wednesday to give my notice for the following Friday (week and a half notice), risk them finding out through a rumor.

I'm leaning towards C, but I'm curious what other people think. At this new company when I explained that I couldn't start on Monday because I wanted to be fair to my old company, two of the people in the room nodded and said that they could appreciate that, one of the other guys just looked confused, as if he couldn't figure out why I'd be so considerate.

Update 5/5/07:
Last night was my last there, I took route B, and it turned out to be the best one. They took it very well, all of the different managers were very nice and wished me well, my direct manager made sure to let me know that I hadn't burned any bridges (her exact words) and that if something didn't work out down the road to let her know and my job would be waiting for me, at the same pay and everything. That was very good to hear, although I don't have any intention of going back.

Tonight the company bought pizzas and a cake, so we could have a little party during lunch, kind of a farewell thing for me I guess. Of all of the people that I've worked with there who have left before me, only once have I seen the company do something like this, and that was about a year ago. Then again, of all of the people that have left, I can probably count on just one hand the number who had the decency to give a full notice and work out their remaining time, without slacking off.

I exchanged numbers with some of the newer guys who have been there only a few weeks, and sometime this month the veterans all plan on getting together for beers some Saturday night, which is great for me since I have Saturdays off for the next two months at the new job.

So everything worked out well, I'm totally done there, get my last paycheck next week, and since I didn't use any of my vacation time (75 hours saved up) they'll pay that to me as well, which is pretty sweet. New job starts on the 14th, so I got a week and a half or so to relax and clean my much neglected apartment.

Thanks to everybody for the input, nice to know that there's other people out there who feel that the high road is the only road.

Always nice to have a week to catch up on stuff (like errands and golf) and mentally prepare yourself for the new gig.

I can understand that. I should've mentioned that the current job is night-shift, the new one will not be. Might be nice to have a week of normal sleeping patterns to get my body back onto a day schedule.

oh hell. That should settle it then. You want to be mentally sharp for a good 1st impression. Take the week.

i would agree, take the week
trying to transition from a night job to a day job AND going into training with only 2 days would be rough

Well I went ahead and wrote a letter of resignation for option B, and after a shower I'll be heading off to work. We'll see how my supervisor takes the news, I suspect he knows that I've been looking elsewhere, but I still can't help but feel a little guilty like I'm doing something bad 🙁

Don't feel bad. You have to look out for yourself because no one else is.

Good move going option B. Since you seem to like your current company, it's a good idea to leave on good terms with them.

And a week of downtime is always nice.

If he's a good boss, he'll understand. You're doing what's in your best interest. Everyone is replaceable.

My boss understands, but he's only been the supervisor since October, with no management experience before that. He's the same age I am (25), and sometimes comes off kind of immature, so I'm not really sure how he'll react to this.

It's the manager above him that I'm more worried about, she's the primary reason I'm leaving. I've been trying to get better hours for months, but since we've been so understaffed, she's refused to let me transfer out of her department, which while I understand would make it difficult on the rest of the team, really isn't a good reason to keep me from advancing in the company. It's made it hard to spend time with my wife and 10-month-old daughter, since I sleep a lot during the day and I'm tired pretty much all the time. I made it clear to her that I wanted different shifts, all I got was vague promises with no action.

Trust me, just do what's best for YOU. Screw everybody else. When push comes to shove, they will throw you under the bus every time. Just remember that and you'll do just fine. I learned the hard way 🙂

Good for you, I recently changed up jobs to a normal M-F day shift job for a little less pay. Before I worked at a different time everyday 1st/2nd shift and I had to work every 3rd weekend. I'm still adjusting to the schedule but over all it is much much better and I am enjoying the job too. Before I did something I could have done out of high school and now I am actually applying my degree and building up my resume, had to do what was best for me.

Well, I held off until the end of the shift to give my notice to my boss, he took it well, he understood why I was leaving. So just 7 more days and then I can relax for an entire week before starting all over again.
