Job for ~52 year old Dad?

My father is looking for somewhat of a laid-back old man sorta job. He's nowhere near being a wal-mart greeter - he was hoping to work at home depot or lowe's but neither is hiring at all where we live.

Opinions? He's made the rounds to all of the mom'n'pop hardware shops, small stores, small security firms, pretty much everywhere except wal-mart or target. He doesn't have any retail experience and I'm wondering if that's why he isn't getting call backs..

He worked as a contractor/remodeler for the past ~30 years. He has tons of references and such, but no actual retail or corporate experience at all.
 
Age discrimination? A lot of managers don't like to hire people that have a few years on them for fear that they might have their "authoritah" undermined due to actual experience.
 
Old????? You're sounding like he's over the hill? WTF, I'm creeping up toward that neighborhood.

Back to the topic at hand, what is his experience? I assume he's been doing some type of work.
 
Been think my 60 year old dad should close up business and get a job.
Let me know how it goes, and if its even possible?
 
My dad retired from his middle management job, and got a job handing out food trays at the VA Hospital. He loves thinking he's helping out the vets. If your dad is a vet too, it will give him a leg up getting a job there. BTW my old man is only 63.

He is a vet, but the closest VA is over an hour away in the middle of the city... Good tip though, they might be able to direct him somewhere or have a work program..

Sounds almost like my dad, he worked doing commercial sales for contractors on building projects and has done remodeling and so forth. He is now 61 and for the past four or so years he has been working at Target as a cashier. He rally likes the company, fair pair and benefits and he gets along with everybody.

 

I wouldnt mind working at a proshop, either tennis or maybe golf. Our city runs a large tennis center as well as a few public golf courses.

If there is a university or community college close by lots of additional possiblities.
 
To me, it's hilarious to see a kid on here asking about a job for his dad...

Can't he find his own jobs?

I sort of remember hitting 52. After 40, they all go by in a blur.


I agree that with his background, one of the Home Depot/Lowes types of places might be a good fit, but in this economy, not many are hiring too often.

What about any of the other hardware-type of stores in your area?

I don't see why it's hilarious? He's fairly 'out of the loop' and doesn't really know where to start. I see him going out and filling out /dropping off apps every day and it's pretty discouraging, even to me.

As mention in my original post, he's applied to every hardware store in the area. They simply aren't hiring right now.
 
Wine pourer at a wine shop. Easy, fun, friendly, age could be somewhat of an advantage since you can seem more "knowledgeable".
 
Working for a car dealer as one of the old guys that drives cars back and forth between dealerships?
 
Maybe he could get a light maintenance position in an apartment complex or something. As long as he has no health issues I can't see why they wouldn't call him back.

I'm talking fixing a leaky pipe or changing a fuse here and there... maybe doing a little bit of painting.

Dunno what sort of qualifications he has but if he has basic knowledge of electrical and plumbing then he'd be a pretty good candidate for most places.


Come to think of it maybe painting in itself would be pretty laid back.
