Job Dilemma: Four Job Offers, Awaiting One - How Do You Do This?

DESCRIPTION:

I have four job offers on the table right now. They were all offered last Monday (Sept. 26th). I asked each of the companies to give me two weeks to think about it and evaluate the job offers I have on hand and no one had a problem with that.

PROBLEM:

That same night, my close friend told me there was an opening at her company, an opening which I was interested in before, but it was not available at that time - till now that is. I e-mailed my cover letter and resume to her to pass it over to the hiring manager. The hiring manager called me the next day to schedule an interview on Wednesday (Sept. 28th). IMHO, I did well in the interview (scheduled to last 30 mins., went over 2 hrs.). By the end of the interview, she told me she was going to schedule up a final interview with her director. From my close friend, I know this is the only interview left before a job offer is made.

STATUS:

Today is Oct. 4th. Tomorrow, it will be exactly a week since I interviewed with them. Next Monday is the deadline I told the other four companies I would have my decision in.

QUESTION:
How do I play this? I want to call the company up and tell them my situation, but I am not sure if this is considered rude/hasty/non-standard/etc. I was thinking of calling them up and say something like:

"Hi Kathleen, this is John, the person you interviewed with last week for the Financial Analyst position. The other companies I have interviewed with have made offers and my tentative deadline is next Monday. I am really interested in this position, however, I am running against a tight deadline. Is there anything you can do to expedite the next process?"

ATOT, what is the right way to do this?

Azurik

By the way, this job offer is my primary preference.

I say call up the prosprective company and say you are out of work and need to get things moving quickly because you can't pay rent/bills or something like that.

That's retarded and foolish. Please god, don't do that.

I think the paragraph stated in the OP sounds fine.

that's perfectly acceptable. I would even take out the tentative part.

I suggest that you accept one of the 4 original offers before you lose them. If you get an offer from the place that you'd like to work, you can always decline the one that you had accepted. And no, do not call the company and rush them. it'll only make things worse

Really?

I heard it was VERY unprofessional to accept a job offer only to reneg to another one.

Agreed. I would remove that, because you need a definitive answer. But I would choose one out of the other 4 though. I wouldn't run the risk of blowing an offer on a "possible" offer.

It's called burning bridges, if you are in a very large industry it's probably not a big deal but if the industry you work in is small you will run into the people who's bridge you burned later in your career and that will hurt you.

I agree 100% Tell them the truth in a respectful, professional manner.

Consider something like this:

"Hi Kathleen, this is John Doe, I interviewed with you last week for the Financial Analyst position. I am very interested in working for ACME however, companies I have previously interviewed with have made offers and are expecting a Monday decision. Can you give me a status on where I stand in your hiring process?"
