NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - The number of job cuts planned by U.S. employers jumped to an eight-month high in September, while hiring announcements fell sharply, an outplacement firm said Tuesday.

The report came just days before the government's critical gauges of unemployment and job growth in September, but did little to clarify how strong those measures would be.

U.S. businesses announced 107,863 job cuts in September, up from 74,150 job cuts in August, a gain of 45 percent, according to Chicago-based Challenger, Gray & Christmas, which keeps track of monthly job-cut announcements.

Maybe Edwards can use the figures in the debate tonight...but don't forget, we've turned the corner!

Such a loaded stat. Sure it's the same number, but the same number was *lower* than it was when Clinton took office. For Dubbya, it's *higher* than it was when he took office.

There was a job gain for Clinton; a job loss for Dubbya.

So, Bush is going to start saying, "When you go to the polls, ask yourself. Are you better off now than you were 8 years ago?" Give me a break!

LOL What a clown you are.

Clinton inherited a 6.8-6.9% unemployment rate and got it down to 5.6%
Bush inherited a 4.3% unemployment and it has risen to around 5.7-6%

They are not the same, drone :p

Kerry needs to tear Bush a new one when they debate on the economy. On paper, it just seems way too easy.

Issue 1
I have yet to hear any liberal come out (Kerry Included) with how they would have prevented the current economy problem. Whenever I ask this question, I get nothing but BS statements but no real answers. I can only conclude that it is due to one of two reasons.

1. They don't know how this could have been fixed so they are just stating a belief.

2. They know that the administration has very little to do with these numbers.

Issue 2
To compare Clinton's employment/economy to any other administration's is apples to oranges. Clinton had NOTHING to do with the employment/economy. It was a failed new commerce plan.

Neither President had anything to do with those numbers. Jeebus....when will people learn that the President has nearly zero impact on the economy and jobs?

The GWB's administration constantly tells the American people that we've turned the corner.
We've "turned" the corner so many times we are ALMOST back (- 1,000,000) to the same number of jobs that we started with four years ago (with millions more people since then!)

Then why did Bush promise all the new jobs that his grand tax cut would provide? LOL, tell us another one. The economy sucks and Bush gets credit for it. If the economy was great he would also get credit for it. Any politicain know that if they want re-elected they better produce good results.

Our leader is supposed to lead. You know, he's out on point, has all the best information and decides which direction to head based on that info. If he gets lost, then it reflects on his leadership/judgement.

Bush's tax cuts were supposed to give us 6 million new jobs, not -900,000. The buck stops where?

Is Bush made of teflon or something? No one on the right will ever pin anything on him. They love to blame Clinton still though.

See trickle down. It just hasn't happened as fast as he predicted (I think he was a little overzealous with his timeframe)

I am not blaming this on Clinton but this began on Clinton's watch. So if you want to blame an administration... Blame Clinton. Using your mindset, Bush is trying to fix a broken economy given to him by Clinton.

If the economy was great he would also get credit for it.
nope... there would be a liberal somewhere who fixed it.

Any politicain know that if they want re-elected they better produce good results.
Agreed but as an educated citizen, you need to know what they can and can't control.

This goes back to my question. What could/should he have done differently? I will agree that if the government had more control over what decisions you can make in your business then he probably could/should have fixed this. I don't want ANY administration to tell me much more than they are now. Fact is... He is not responsible for the .com, he is not responsible for Enron, he is not responsible for the fair market value for jobs being set lower.

What could he have done differently?
