Wild thing: Joaquin Phoenix's appearance has dramatically transformed since he announced his retirement from acting

Grizzly man: Hollywood heart-throb Joaquin Phoenix shows no signs of giving up his dishevelled look

Last updated at 10:27 AM on 18th January 2009

He might have retired from acting, but Hollywood heart-throb Joaquin Phoenix shows no signs of turning his back on the 'grizzly man' look he has been cultivating in recent months.

Just weeks after being pictured at a Miami nightclub looking unkempt and worse-for-wear, the actor was spotted looking even more dishevelled on a night out in Las Vegas.

With an image looking increasingly similar to convicted serial killer Charles Manson, it's hard to believe this is the same man who had the world - and women - at his feet just three short years ago.

The star was the toast of Tinseltown following his Oscar-nominated performance as Johnny Cash in Walk The Line.

He also enjoyed critical acclaim for his part as handsome Roman Emperor Commodus in the 2000 epic Gladiator.

However Phoenix recently announced his retirement from acting and he has turned his back on the Hollywood scene - to become a full time musician.

Concerns are mounting about the 34-year-old's health, sanity and well-being after the actor had a troubled 2008.

His behaviour has been described as 'bizarre' and 'erratic'. A source told Mail Online: ''For people who know Joaquin, it's been an incredibly traumatic year, filled with chaos.

'Everyone wants to help but nobody's been able to break through. His bizarre behaviour has everyone worried. It's just getting scary.

'Joaquin has rejected everything that has come along with Hollywood stardom, the acclaim, the attention, and the artistic opportunities.'

Earlier this year, Phoenix disappointed his Two Lovers co-star Gwyneth Paltrow and fans by snubbing the film's world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May and the subsequent premieres around Europe.

Phoenix publicly entered rehab three years ago for treatment of alcoholism

Looks like he packed on a few pounds as well.

Man, to go from King of the world to Geico Caveman in three short years! :Q

All he needs is a hooded sweatshirt and he can play the lead role in a unabomber flick. Too bad, I liked a lot of his movies.
