JLee's 1991 Toyota MR2 V6 build thread

I might have to fly Fuzzy down to help with this one.

It's a 1991 Toyota MR2 n/a hardtop chassis - looks like manual steering, no ABS, but power windows/locks/mirrors. The previous owner allegedly completed wiring and it just needs to be cleaned up. Existing motor mounts work for all but one- and that one is on order from Paul Woods. I have to get the motor mounts sorted, run coolant lines, figure out the shifter cable situation (the E53 shift linkage is on the wrong side), and finish the exhaust.

Somewhere (there's TONS of crap stuffed in the car) there's supposed to be all the missing interior and exterior trim. Here's a list of what I already have and will be getting (he forgot some stuff):

JDM 3VZ-FE 3.0l V6 with ported and polished heads
New Toyota E53 Camry/ES300 5 speed transmission
MR2 Turbo hubs/axles
Tundra resonator and Borla muffler
HID kit
Tokico Illumina adjustable shocks
TRD springs
Unknown 17" aftermarket wheels with new tires
Corolla S leather steering wheel
1994 MR2 spoiler

Now to the pics! The passenger fender and front bumper cover are not attached - I just stuck them in place so it looks less shitty.

Or an "I want moar faster" craving :awe:

yep....thats a Jlee thing for sure...next thing we know V6 MR2 has a turbo the Tacoma has a remote turbo and the V got cams and headwork. i think the sheer cost of making more power out of the Turbo MR2 will keep that at bay for a little bit!

V is stock. Rear differential is too weak to make any decent power, and $7k for a new one is insane.

The MR2 is almost at its limit..with the GT3071 I'll be around 350rwhp. Enough for 11 second quarter mile times - more power easily with cams, but that'll push me close to ringland failure and then maybe block failure, so I think we're gonna stay here for a while. 11s for a loaded street car with AC/etc should be good enough for a daily. :sneaky:

The Tacoma needs an engine rebuild before boost or the rings will be like "Ha, later fellas"..so that's not happening anytime soon either.

Plus, I'm going to run out of money eventually.

Holy shit! Awesome! that is going to be a good long term project. she looks like she needs some tlc. Might be worth your while to double check all the wiring with continuity tests to be sure everything is where it needs to be -unless your certain the previous owner was capable. how its it that this fell into your lap?

Get some forged pistons and rods, higher flow intake manifold, meth kit, and the 3s should be good for some more punishment. =p

My roommate found it on Craigslist - couldn't pass it up for $1500. 😉 I figure the suspension, wheels/tires, steering wheel and engine/transmission alone would meet/exceed the whole package cost.

I don't need meth with E85. 😀 Forged pistons and cams will let me break 400whp moderately safely - that would cost almost as much as what I paid for this project, so I'm going to hang around 350whp for a while.

Need a kindergarten paint scheme Fisher Price MR2 to go with the Lego Miata :awe:

E53's been apart, did they install a LSD?

I thought the red that I saw in the rear was an aftermarket spoiler at first. I cringed a bit until I saw that it was just your hoist for the engine. 😛

Aftermarket HIDs though? :$

Apparently they're in a box somewhere. Unless it's an expensive "proper" kit with new housings/etc to do it right, they'll stay in a box.

How much more noticeable is the torque in the V6?

man you no rust fellas are sure lucky!

1500 mr2 here would have much cancer!

I've only been a passenger in one once. The difference is HUGE before the turbo spools. After that...well, goodbye V6.
