All stripped holes are appropriate time-serted - tapped with tap guides this time. Amazing how that works...thanks to JCH13's expertise, I think we may be good to go.

Hopefully my new studs will be in tomorrow (expected today, but Toyota never called).

I can't find an exhaust gasket in stock...apparently nobody up here fixes Camrys anymore? WTF.

So, that'll have to wait 'till the morning. I did get new studs, but unfortunately my local dealer only has the silly hex studs which are fking $2.90 each (at my 20% discounted cost), instead of $1.20ish like ordinary studs. Oh well.

Meanwhile, we're fixing JCH13's Miata.

At first I was going to be sympathetic because it sucks when your fast car its down for so long.

Then I remembered your beater is also around 300 HP so instead I'm going to hate, so FU.

As a fellow beater camry owner, I have to agree :p

haha...yeah... :D

I got my bike back, too - but it's not registered/inspected so I can't ride it. :\

Since I'm RMA'ing the Infinity Kappa Perfects, I decided to run my old Polks off the head unit and just put the Infinity system in the Subaru later. That's done now...I had to make a larger-than-normal speaker mount to cover the jagged mess that a previous owner left in my passenger door sheet metal, but now the door panel won't fit over it, even with the edges trimmed down. That may require an alternative repair, but for now it's close enough - the door shuts and latches, and there's an autocross school that I'm leaving for in 9 hours...

JCH13 stopped by and helped me drop the turbo in - now I'm going to go hook everything else up. All the studs took proper torque, so we may be safe.

Pics later, hopefully.

Personally, this is all painful to me.

Seriously, you are complaining about rough edges of a speaker install and your door panel doesn't fit.

Possibly the one 90's toyota I approve of. RWD ftw.

btw, I wish more cops were like jlee. In LA, they've become tools of the statist Leftists.

I thought you weren't posting in this thread anymore. And yes, my door has been hacked apart, leaving a nice gap beside the speaker and what's left of the door. It sounds a lot less shitty now that there's no gap. I'll post pics later.

Turns out there's a hairline crack in the weld in the turbo adapter (which is why ATS Racing now uses one piece machined units)...exhaust leak is still here. All the timeserted studs are holding torque, though, so I think we'll be good after I get a better quality adapter.

I volunteered to refurb JLee's turbo adapter with Bonky at Bonky's garage. With some reinforcement and a real anneal it might have a chance at surviving longer than 1500miles.

First off, I cleaned off all of the paint from around the crack. I used a die grinder, angle grinder with sanding disc, and a wire brush.

It was bad.

To stabilize everything I gouged the crack in two spots and tack-welded it.

I then drilled out the ends of each crack with a center drill. The crack went about 3/4ths of the way around the tube.

I then gouged out the entire crack with a die grinder and cutoff wheel.
mUD80.jpg

Then we ultrasonically cleaned it. Why? Because race car.
PyJ0B.jpg

Preheated it to 500F (IR thermometer FTW) because of the huge material thickness difference between the tube and the adapter. This will help reduce thermal stresses and cracking as the weld cools.

A little TIG from yours truly, and the tube is welded together.

Next I sliced out a plate to build a reinforcement with using a die grinder and cutoff tool.

Hey! It fits!

Another pre-heat and some more TIG.

Next we torched it to about 1300F using oxy-acetylene. See the weights in the back? We cooked them up to about 900F.
btrqk.jpg

Then we dropped the weights on top of some kitty litter in a metal bucket and put the turbo adapted on top. The weights were heated and added to keep the adapter hotter for longer.
nGQYh.jpg

Covered everything in litter for the night to slow the cooling rate.

The adapter came out still hot to the touch the morning after, so it should have a nice soft temper now, hopefully that will help keep it from cracking.

We'll see once JLee drives with it again!

My Lord that is a nice job. Hopefully you don't get cracks in other areas now, though.

Hell yeah, my kind of overkill. Fix the problem part with gold and never ever worry about it again. If the car is hit with a nuclear weapon, you know the part you fixed will still be 100% perfect. :awe:

 Interested to hear how the clutch pedal fix feels once you get it back on the road.

It feels a LOT better than it used to - it also engages a lot higher than before, but not in a bad way. Though since there's so much free/dead space at the lower end of its travel, I may buy / come up with a stopper to shorten the pedal throw.

lol!

Awesome job guys. Someday (maybe when I'm 40 or 50) Ill have your level of expertise.
Also, damn, nice TIG welding. Looks so clean.
