JuJitsu if you want some street effective techniques....TKD if you want more fun. Though, your enjoyment mostly it depends on the place, people and instructors.

Key-Board-Do is the best.
No matter what kind of situations or people you face, key-board-do will just kick ass.
This martial art is so damn sophisticated that it doesn't even require for you to move the body, all you need is your fingers.
Bring JJT, TKD, Kung-Fu, anything, even bullets. With the almighty power of Key-board-Do, I say that I have fought with bullets and nuclear missles and pwned them.

I've been thinking of doing some kind of fighting/self-defense techniques as something fun to pickup, take a class 1-2x a week in NYC. I don't know anything, and i've never fought in my life. What should I start with? It seems like boxing, or jiu jitsu would be the way to go... any suggestions?

try both

I've never tried boxing but I cant imagine getting punched in the face is much fun. As for jiu jitsu, wearing the gi and being in very close contact with sweaty men may also take some getting used to.

Tried TKD and it was a joke. I did BJJ for about a year and I'm going to go back into it when I can find another good school. BJJ is really useful and teaches you many techniques that when you use people will be like wtf. My cousin got his black belt in TKD, then I told him to train in BJJ and boxing and even he said TKD was a joke after he started.

From what my Korean friend explained, there are two types of TKD: a fighting style and an art style. I would prefer to do it his way, TDK, BJJ, Judo, Hapkido, Muay Thai, and the Korean marine fighting. :p I think there's another one he's a black belt in, but I am at a loss atm.

TKD vs JJ are two totally different things, decide which one you want, they are both valid, personally I tend to go with TKD because of striking and distance.

This guy wants you to get your ass kicked. Don't listen to him. If you take TKD you're going to learn how to wildly flail your legs around while the other guy destroys you.

Judo as explained by my teacher: a bunch of guys in pretty pajamas. Nothing to worry about until they've attained black belt or higher. At that point, they are formidable badasses and can kick anyone's ass at an equivalent belt level in TKD.

uh no.

if you're looking for ground work - jiu jitsu is definitely the route to go. if you want striking - muay thai is a solid striking art from what i can tell (seems like a lot MMA fighters do some combo of BJJ/muay thai to get both a good ground and striking game)

You'll get a lot more exercise out of jiu jitsu and you don't have all those annoying katas (forms) to memorize. JJ is more flexible an art, in my opinion, than TKD. Most fighters have no idea what to do on the ground, but launch a slow kick and they'll punch you with no training at all.

Jiu-jitsu: most confrontations quickly become a close quarter grappling match. I would also recommend Goju ryu, a form of te from Okinawa.

Well, if you have to choose between the two, take Jiu Jitsu. Tae Kwon Do is worthless outside of TKD competitions. Everyone knows this.

Edit: Wow. This is an old thread. Nothing has changed though. TKD is still worthless.

the whole 'mma' stuff is mainstream now, but the best dojos used to teach a primary art (for rank/belts) along with a mix of others for the self-defense part.

Defensive art or not your are going to be effective unless you are looking to start fights...

also what happens in a ring is far different than real life. Chances are you are not going to meet another martial artist. Fight should be done in about 10 seconds tops.

If you do meet a fighter then with no rules the fight should last 30-40secs tops.

I was taking your opinion seriously until you spouted that last line of bull.

oh. my input. right.

TKD is for striking and keeping (or putting) your opponent at a distance. JJ is for controlled joint flexing, throwing, control, and grapling.

Neither fight will last very long with a competent fighter. Pick what you're better at or what comes more natural to you.

That's the layman's belief....TKD being kicked based mostly does work it's best at kicking range though.

I do BJJ right now, but it's hard for this 40 year old body to roll everyday with 20 year olds. My body isn't what it used to be, but I enjoy it and I have a good instructor.

Yes, because knees don't bend. ;) While you're right that it's a leg sport and best utilized at range, there are plenty of moves designed to move, cripple, or kill your opponent at close range.

Boxing + JuJitsu for real world use. Personally I've always found TKD to be most enjoyable, regardless of practical application.

Any martial art will teach you one thing though, and that is to keep a cool and focused head in a heated situation.

LOL yeah, I didn't even look at the OP date. Looks like I said pretty much the same thing back then too.
