why is leno being forced out

I don't think the plan was for leno to be forced out. Originally he said he was going to retire after 2008, but this was back in '05/'06, now he wants to stay, but by the time he decided this they had already made plans to move Conan forward.

I'm just glad it's not carson daly moving to conan's spot.

Leno never intended to retire yet, he was forced out in 2004 to keep Conan with NBC. There were options for Conan to jump ship and NBC promised the Late Night slot to him in 2009 to keep him.

Leno can bite back now with a move to ABC or cable.

?The Tonight Show? earns an estimated $100 million a year. Mr. Leno, who turns 58 in April, has kept his intentions for his post-?Tonight? career to himself, declining any comment about what he might choose to do after his contract expires. His friends and associates have speculated that he could be looking for some way to make NBC regret asking him to make way for Mr. O?Brien ? though Mr. Leno publicly has been nothing but supportive of Mr. O?Brien.

And come to think of it I liked Conan a lot better say... 5 years ago. Now I frequently find him annoying.

Same. The skits are not what they used to be, and Conan seems like he's dialed up the "be a jackass for the first 15 minutes of the show" way too much.

Conan > Leno > Fallon(I guess?) > Carson Daly

Letterman doesn't do anything for me.

I like Leno and Conan. It's pretty stupid to force Leno out but on the other hand they don't want Conan to go the way of Letterman. they're a bit screwed no matter what. Unless of course Conan is willing to take the 35 mil and wait a few more years before taking over for Leno.

I wonder how many of his own jokes he'll laugh at.

Seriously. Fallon ought to hire Horatio Sanz as his sidekick. They'll make a perfect couple: always laughing before the punchline.

I usually don't get to watch Conan, so this doesn't bother me at all. I'll get to see Conan at 1030 and Fallon can go on to blow donkeys at 1130.

From what i can see Leno said I am retiring in X years. Well X years is getting real close and now he wants to stay. problem is NBC already said/offered the job to Conan so leno can;t stay. Rumor is NBC will offer Leno another job somewhere to make sure he doe snot jump ship to ABC.

Best thing IMO is for Dave to retire and let leno take over to stuff it to NBC. Dave owns his show so he still make money and funk off NBC at the same time without doing a thing.
Wouldn't that require Leno and Letterman to stop their "feud"? Or, has it been resolved?
I believe the overall issue has been worked out, but I doubt they'd be willing to work together on a daily basis.

I didn't think Jimmy Kimmel would be around for as long as he has, but he's still going. That fake feud with Matt Damon was pretty funny as well.

Exactly how I feel. I wonder how the older audience is really going to like Conan's type of humor.

This whole arrangement is strange - Leno has led Letterman in the ratings for many years, and the Tonight Show is highly profitable, as is the Conan show. Conan will alienate at least some of the Tonight Show audience (and perhaps his own, if he waters down his show to accommodate the Tonight Show's older demographic). Meanwhile, Fallon is a witless hack and will lose most or all of the Conan audience.

If NBC were smart they'd keep Jay and find a way to placate Conan if at all possible. My understanding is that they have inked a deal with Conan that requires them to pay him $35M if they don't give him the Tonight Show as promised, but that could be small money compared to the alternative.
Conan must have rejected everything they offered in '04 and just given them a hardcore ultimatum, either give me the Tonight Show or I leave, period. I think that's been a dream of his since childhood.

It might take the $35-40M plus an insane Letterman-type salary to keep Conan at 12:35 and willing to swallow the taste of having that job very publicly yanked back from him. But that may be the best option for NBC -- as you allude to, I believe that Conan is kryptonite to people 50 and over, and this news about the Late Night replacement host appears to have that show set for an impending date with magnificent fail. Their late night lineup will take a significant hit if they go through with this.

Who knows.

I do know that if Jimmy Fallon plays his cards right and hires Horatio Sanz as a sidekick, he could find his show mentioned among the likes of the Magic Johnson Show. It's something to shoot for anyway.

Ugh

NBC paid him a big contract, found out he couldn't act in movies they cast him in, so now they're trying to find something to do with him.

Conan sucked at first too, but he had untapped talent. We've seen all that Falon can do on SNL- and that consisted of getting the giggles during sketches.

That would be AWESOME! 😀 Dave and Jay still have bad feelings, what better way to get over them than by giving Jay his show heheh.
