Jimmy Carter has as one of his 2 life goals. Middle East peace and the eradication of Guinea worm. He won a Nobel Prize for brokering a deal between Israel and Egypt.

At 99 years old he may yet realize one of those two goals.

Here is a brief on the history of the Guinea worm plague in Africa and Asia.

As of a few years ago this was the case update

As of 2023 there are only 6 reported cases in the world.

Say what you will about the successes of his administration Jimmy Carter is one of the great human beings

I was fortunate to get to vote for him as my first presidential election. He was the real deal.

Not the best president ever; some because of bad luck some because just how things turned out some because of who he is - but he really truly was a great person - two characteristics he had was good intentions and integrity something that seems to be lacking these days from many members of congress.

I met the man a few times in the mid 80s when he was doing his habitat for humanity thing near an old apt I used to live in on the lower east side of Manhattan. Truly a great human being.

In hospice AND celebrating his 99th birthday!!

That old saying of ‘they broke the mold after he came out’ sure rings true.

Yep, and most of his family died of the same type of cancer, but that gene seemed to have bypassed him.

He always put the interests of his country above any political considerations. He pushed the Camp David peace accords that led to peace between Egypt and Israel, I believe the Israels did not like him because he was too fair and balanced in his values and mindset (they usually prefer more unprincipled politicos that more easily bend to their wishes and needs).

He fully deserved the Nobel peace prize (20002) for his endeavors to promote peace and overseeing elections in troubled countries around the world.. Should have also gotten the Nobel in 1978 for his work in the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty.

Reagan would be perfectly at home in today's GOP
Hell no. He's the first president I voted for, and I am no fan after all the shit he pulled while in office; but I'm 100% sure that he would look at the current crowd and wonder what in the effing hell was wrong with them. Not that he would pick up a mirror and realize that he and his cronies were the beginning of this end.

The guy that told Iran to hold on to the American hostages a bit longer to hurt Carter's reelection bid? And then sold arms to Iran, who is under embargo?

He was a white supremacist race baiting war hawk who despised the poor and saw government's role as being nanny state for the rich, bootstraps for the rest of us. He'd fit right in with Trump's GOP.

Uh, I never said RR was a good man, he wasn’t. But this current bunch of Rs can’t get anything done in the house, they are dysfunctional and incoherent - he would have hated that. Thats all. Not looking to run this thread off the rails.

Jimmy Carter who admitted to Playboy magazine to checking out women. The quote was

"I committed lust in my heart"

How many politicians could openly admit that let alone a President with the exception of Italy's Berlusconi

Duh! He's a guy. Can't get any more honest than that.
