The Doors were one of the most influential rock bands of the era and probably all time. Though I feel like their music hasn't aged well. Especially if you compare them to the Beatles and Stones. That's just my opinion.
I think they did go on to influence a lot of later bands, directly and indirectly. Early Pink Floyd seems to have a similar vibe to me.

I think pretty much any talented star that dies young ends up at least a little over-rated. They get a big chunk of extra credit for being dead.

No one was more overrated than Elvis. He started off as a ripoff artist, and ended as a living caricature. Morrison had limited singing ability, but was a decent writer. The band had a unique sound, and was an important contribution to music as a whole.

He was only slightly less limited than Morrison. The only thing Elvis left us was a metric ton of joke material.

You may not like the material he sings, but damn the guy can sing. Morrison, not so much.

I always felt Morrison was one of the original Rock Stars. He came in and did what he wanted and left. Before him and the wave he rode in on there was such packaging with artists (much like today) that the group was a breath of fresh air, bringing music back to a emotional vibe than a perfectly packaged. One of the things I liked about them, was the music they made wasn't for everyone, some people were never going to like it but it didn't interest them to change it for mass appeal. I wish there were more musicians like him these days of pop products.

I never liked The Doors until the past couple of years. Not even sure what ever really swayed me to start to explore their music, but lately I have been liking more and more of it.
I think about the time that Denny Doherty died, they kept playing clips of The Mamas and The Papas, which kind of got me on a kick of late 60s/Psychedelic rock sound. The more doors songs I heard that had that, the more I wanted to hear.
