Debuts at #2 on the NYTimes list. Definitely aided by the show last year which is where I first heard about him. I picked up books 1-5 in two omnibus editions. Wasn't blown away by book 1 or 2, but by 3 it seemed he'd found his voice and the humor and action made for a terrific blend. Later books built in great secondary characters. I'm all caught up now and looking forward to starting Small Favor....but I just started Malazan 3 so it might have to wait a while.

Go Jim!

Anyone read his codex alera? any good?

I love the Dresden series. I couldn't get into his second series, it's drastically different. I think I might try it again, I've been enjoying the Dante Valentine series from Lilith Saintcrow, and there's a few other books that are styled like the Dresden novels that I want.

I need to get back into this series. I read through Dead Beat when I used to take the train to work, but stopped there after I got a new job and had to drive. I bought Proven Guilty but never started it.

There's even a comic book series now (of Dresden Files). I think it was released this week. It's based on the books but begins with a prequel story, IIRC.

it's like harry potter for adults. but better.

Yah, pretty decent. I don't look for fabulous writing, but he has good character development and keeps it engaging.

I got tired of reading them after book 5 and took a break. They weren't bad but they weren't great either. I'd like to try his codex alera series which sounds a lot more serious but the libraries around here haven't stocked them yet. I've read the Anita Blake books which up to book 7 or 8 where it turns into hard core porn are the same kind of stupid entertainment as the Dresden books. Just started Carrie Vaugn's werewolf series which is also pretty much the same setup.

Definitely felt the Anita Blake similarity in books 1-3. After that it diverged enough and developed enough of its own mythos to stand on its own. Anita I've read up to 8, and have 9 in softcover. I think at 10 it goes pr0n, which is annoying since the early books really were great stories.

The last Anita book actually does have a plot again other then "who will Anita bang next?". Still wasn't anywhere near as good as the early books but it was an improvement.

I just finished Small Favor two days ago, I thought it was good. I think there are going to also be one or two more books released before the end of the year, he is cranking them out now.

I tried getting into codex alera, read half of the first book and stopped I got kind of bored with it, but I also had a lot of other things going on at the same time if anyone has read more of these books I would like to know if they get better.
