hey guys, I'm fairly new to this forum, and my friend told me 2 join so I could get some help on building a new computer.

I've heard that building a comp takes a lot of knowledge, but unfortunately, my laptop "died" so I'm pressed for time to get a new computer.

I am going to build a new computer, and this is what i am thinking:

case: antec 900 atx midtower
hard drive: wd caviar black 1tb 7200 RPM SATA
momma board: ASUS M4A79XTD EVO AM3 AMD 790X ATX AMD Motherboard
graphix card: SAPPHIRE 100283L Radeon HD 5770 (Juniper XT) 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card
memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor
Power Source: CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7
cd/dvd drive: Sony Optiarc 24X DVD/CD Rewritable Drive Black SATA Model AD-7240S-0B - OEM

total price: $931.40, including shipping+tax

I already have a windows 7 cd for software, a mouse, keyboard, and monitor.

budget: around $1000

computer use: typing essays for high school, watching Youtube and videos, movies, torrenting, and playing computer games
i.e. modern warfare 1 & 2, left 4 dead 2, GTA IV, Bad Company 2, etc.

Also, I really don't know how to simplify my list, but if you want, I can email my wishlist from newegg.com to you. All I'm really doing is copying and pasting the name of the product.

Questions:If the router for my internet is 2 rooms away (my room, and then across the living room), will the connection for games like modern warfare 2 be good? also, when playing games, i plan to tone them down, so they don't lag, (turning off shadows, blood, etc). Do I need any special drives for usb and flash cards?

Oh yeah...some more stuff:

antec 900 has 4 fans

Thanks in advance for giving me suggestions and advice on what I should do to make this computer work, and for it to not leave a huge hole in my budget.

Slow down there! The post is all over the place haha, but regardless, welcome to AT.

There are cheaper cases that are easier to work with. The Antec 900 is a brilliant case, but it takes a little bit of modding to get it to your likings. If all you want is gaming, liquid cooling is too expensive, and your money could be put to better use elsewhere.

And no, laptop uses SO-DIMM, 200pin. It's a different size all together. Memory runs in channels (dual/triple), so you'd want to match them up the best you can for optimal performance (e.g. 4slots x 2gb = 8gb memory, 2slots x 2gb = 4gb, etc).

If all you are going to use the computer for is gaming, I would recommend the AM3 platform. The Intel 1156 socket processors are faster, but for gaming, all that speed would just be sitting anyways. The 1366 (i7-920 +) is an enthusiast platform that sole gamers shouldn't really need.

How long are you keeping this build for? Are you overclocking?

CPU: $161 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-674-_-Product

MOBO: $77 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-392-_-Product

OR

$120 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-402-_-Product (If you want Crossfire, multiple graphics)

RAM: $115 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-303-_-Product

HDD: $75 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-319-_-Product (You'd have to find this on another website. I bought mine off Amazon for $75 shipped)

Case: $70 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-066-_-Product

PSU: $70 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-007-_-Product

GPU: $300 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-442-_-Product

ONLY IF YOU ARE OVERCLOCKING: $35 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...he%20mugen%202 (might have to find elsewhere, the egg's been out of stock)

That's for an AM3 platform computer. I would recommend it for gaming. Any money saved can go towards upgrades in the future or whatever you want.

If you want an Intel platform (1156 socket, i5-750)

CPU: $195 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-215-_-Product

MOBO: $105 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-405-_-Product

CASE: $65 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-044-_-Product

Everything else stays the same from above. The AM3 build puts you at about $833, before taxes and rebates (That's with the heatsink, without -$35).

The Intel build puts you at about $890. Neither has CFX capabilities. I listed the motherboard, but the graphics would cost a lot more. You probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the two anyways. Pick whatever you want.

For your monitor

$200 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824236052

So that would put you at around $1033 for the AM3, and $1090 for the Intel. If you leave the processor at a very mild stock voltage overclock with the stock heatsink, you can get it with the monitor for $998, before taxes and rebates (AM3 only). Otherwise you can drop the graphics for the cheaper 5770, and save money there, but you'd lose a lot of performance...another way would be to drop the Ripjaw, and pick up some cheap OCZ Gold for around $85, but it's not very reliable (I wouldn't do it).

You can shave off about $60 from the AM3 build if you go with the slower AMD Athlon II X4 620 Propus http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...03706&cm_re=amd_propus-_-19-103-706-_-Product. It should still do what you want in a pinch.

So uh.. you sure you want to do liquid cooling on your first ever build?

You haven't bothered to specify what processor you are playing with, and unless you plan on overclocking there is no point in even thinking of liquid cooling.

I like to follow the Keep It Simple Stupid rule of project design. NO point in complicating things if they don't help meet your requirements.

I would recommend sticking with an aftermarket HS&F if you would like to keep the processor cool. Liquid cooling like h20 will take alot of your time trying to figure out how to route the loop, place the parts, and then modify your case if need be. That's after about 270$ on decent components for the liquid cooling loop. If you are serious about it, post in the case and cooling section as there are alot of knowledgeable people that hang there. I got my help there and basically its the right forum section for it.

So that said, if you stick with an aftermarket HS&F the lineup goes Pro Mega lapped > T.R.U.E. lapped > Pro Mega > T.R.U.E. etc I had a link to a chart on HS&F cooling on an i7 but I can't find it...

Read this about PSUs. It's a link to a Seasonic X 650 but get an idea of how he reviews PSUs then search the sight for other PSU reviews.

Hi,

Please attempt to use proper English in your post. Most of our non-native speakers do a better job than you. It doesn't have to be perfect, but some capitalization or correct spelling would go a long way to getting replies.

Bye.

I already have a windows 7 cd for software, a mouse, and I'm sure I can dig around to find a keyboard.

Liquid Cooling is wasted on a $1000 Build unless you are thinking about overclocking to 5Ghz. Keeping it cool should be easy in a Thermaltake Element S which is cheaper than the Antec 900 listed. Other than the fact that I recommend intel for a lot of my builds this is a good one. For that budget you may be able to get a separate boot drive. I'd recommend the 150GB Velociraptor. If you can't afford that, get a smaller RE3, or WD Caviar Black.

How old are you? 8? You probably don't even have a valid CC to purchase things online.
