Most of the time the on call phone never rings.

This time I have had it ring in the middle of the night for a problem.

Friday night just before I getting to a restaurant for dinner.

Again Saturday night just be for dinner.

Finally today when I was leaving for a football game.

Do you get compensated for being on call?

Why would you make plans on a weekend that you were on call? (Murphy's law guarantees you'll get called when you do)

If it makes you feel any better, this is my schedule when my boss is gone (and no, I am salaried and do not get anything extra:

Wake up at 5am, get to work by 5:45. Work until 4pm. Head home. VPN in and work from about 8-9pm. Repeat.

This. ^^^

Or just tell them you aren't doing it anymore or quit which has about the same results.

They should pay you just for the time being on-call, because you have to be near a computer at all times. It is usually 1/3 of your hourly rate.

Then when you do get called, it should be your hourly rate.

If you are on salary, then quit, or don't bitch about it on a forum.
