A lot of the nicer watches have jewels in the mechanisms. What are they there for?

They're bearing with a very high hardness that keep the mechanical mechanisms accurate.

Yup. :)

The D'Arsonval movement meters in our Allen & Heath mixers have jeweled movements too.
