YouTube Sensation Earns NFL Tryout

The video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDwbjHV8jLo&feature=player_embedded

In October we showed you this video, of a Norwegian kicker named Havard Rugland and his amazing kicking skills.

The compilation exploded across the Internet and currently has nearly one million views. Even some NFL scouts took notice. And, to say the least, they were impressed.

So the scouts asked kicking coach and former NFLer Michael Husted to work with Rugland in San Diego. After some training Rugland, who has never played American football, recently had a tryout with the New York Jets.

"It went well," Rugland told Norwegian state broadcaster NRK. "They tested me on field goals and kickoffs. Obviously you feel a little more pressure here, but I stayed pretty calm."

It takes only one viewing of the video to see that Rugland has some serious potential. In fact, Husted even compared him to Sebastian Janikowski of the Oakland Raiders.

"Havard has incredible talent as a kicker," Husted told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. "He has a cannon for a leg. As he continues to refine his technique, he could be one of the strongest kickers in the NFL."

The 27-year-old Rugland, who says his goal is to get an NFL contract by the 2013 season, wouldn't be the first Norwegian kicker to play professional football. In fact, he'd have extremely lofty standards to live up to. One of the three kickers in the NFL Hall of Fame is Norwegian Jan Stenerud. The former Chiefs, Packers and Vikings kicker played 19 seasons in the NFL and was a four-time Pro Bowler.

He's more accurate than Sanchez!

Seems like only the Jets or Cowboys would do something like this. But I'm all for this Swedish fellow getting a shot to play in the NFL. Nick Folk is a pretty good kicker though, seems like some teams with a struggling kicker (like Green Bay) would be more willing to take in a sideshow kicker

Article says he's Norwegian. Hope he gets a spot.

This reminds me of "it's always sunny in philadelphia" when the gang gets invincible and Dee dresses up like a guy named "Cole" to kick fieldgoals.

I read that article last night...I hope to see him in the league next year. Depends on how he handles a kick when people are rushing to break him in half, but he looks like he has a hell of a leg.

I really despise 'I'm so great' Youtube compilations.

Some guy shoots god-knows-how-much footage of himself passing/kicking/pitching/[insert sports-related thing] and cuts it down to all the shots of successful attempts. Color me unimpressed.

Keep the camera rolling next time, losers.

Like where he made 5 or 6 50 yard kicks in a row?

yea i dunno i kind of agree somewhat.

if you took videos of me at the driving range over like 20 trips, i'm sure i could make myself look like a pga quality golfer with a 3 minute compilation.

but you can't deny the kid has skills.

You told them!

Really though most people couldn't make a field goal of 30 yards let alone 60. That takes skill, a lot of physicality, and a lot of practice. Some sports' trick shot vids aren't as impressive, like basketball trickshots. Billiards tricks are usually pretty amazing.

It's not that there's no skill in making the kicks- it's just that you could give any practiced kicker a similar showing, depending on how long he's willing to keep trying until he makes the shot.

And I guess I missed the five kicks in a row. I only watched about half of it before it got really boring- up until that point, every single kick was still an isolated snippet of video.

I wasn't even good enough to pitch in little league, but I bet I could still make an impressive baseball-throwing video if it was all single throws with jump cuts in-between. You just wouldn't see many, many failed tries.

And I dunno how many times the guy in the OP failed- that's kinda my point. He may just be making himself look worse.

Give an awesome pitcher a 'shooting gallery' and a bunch of baseballs. He may be able to hit bottles and cans and shit with, say, 60% accuracy. But put a cut in between every successful throw, and suddenly my 5% accuracy video looks the same.

I don't care how many shots it took to get those, the guy was darn good in what I saw. Let's see how he does loaded down with a uniform and people rushing at him. Hoping he makes it big time.

Not many people can make 1 50 yard kick. Pros max out around 60, and he made one of those too. Oh, and he followed that up with a 50, 40, 30 yard kick also without stopping the video.

I get what you are saying and all, but this is more than just cut scenes. He shows he has the leg to kick long balls and some consistency. Accuracy is the only thing missing, he demonstrates that, but it is cut. Certainly worth giving him a tryout, good for him.

That's a freakish leg, with a fraction of the extension nfl players get. I wish him well. Without a story like this, one could assume the vid was trickery.

The 60, 50, 40, 30 string was about a minute in out of the 4 minute video. You basically didn't watch it at all.

No...apparently I watched about 50 seconds of it. :D

Sorry, I guess it just didn't take too long to dismiss it. There were how many isolated kicks in the first minute now? I guess I just assumed that's all it would be.

I could still make the argument for 'how many times did he film that stream of kicks,' but I won't go that far. He obviously has skill. But like others have stated, making a single kick under pressure, no 're-dos', is a little different. But who knows, he very well may have it in him.

I was more just annoyed by the style of video, rather than shitting on that particular guy. There have been a lot of those vids recorded by college athletes and the like.

thats standard for any NFL kicker.

one thing he did to embellish his skill was using the wind to make his kicks look more than what they were.

Now that's entirely possible if not likely. If he's bad the try out will tell, like I said he's worth taking a look at.

LOL, stop while you're ahead. you do realize 1% of ATOT couldn't get a 50-yard field goal, right?

sure, he might crumble after he has 5 300lb men coming after him but...

take as long as you want and get me a youtube video of you doing ANYTHING that would make a professional business even finish your video.
