Weren't the loyalists known as "Tories"?

I choose to take that as a metaphor for something else.

Buddy, you're a gun, make a big noise
Shootin in the street, gonna be a big GAT someday
You got mud in your breach, your mags a disgrace
Kicking that sling all over the place, singin'

Reee coil, reee coil, will rock you....
That was me at age 5 or 6 when dad took me quail hunting and I begged to fire his shotgun - flat on my ass. Then i ratted him out to mom. I know. F'ing little weasel.

Whigs, I thought?

Apparently not

It commonly refers to:

Conservative Party (UK), a British political party
Conservative Party of Canada, a Canadian political party
Conservative Party of Canada (1867–1942)
Progressive Conservative Party of Canada (1942–2003)
Loyalist faction in the American Revolution
Tories (British political party), a British political faction of the 17th to 19th centuries
Tory Party (disambiguation), other political parties by that name

I see. Amazing how distasteful that name is/would be here for 100% of the public, despite the current Tories being many many many miles left of our current hard-right ultra-Nazi Republicans that somehow still fancy themselves "conservative."

...also in several ways left of our Democrat party.

'tory' I assume you're referring to - it has another meaning IIRC from the Irish which I presume is the origin for what you're saying:
"The Irish peasantry also used the term Tory to refer to an outlaw or a miscreant of any kind into the 19th century." (from wiki)

... which I think is completely fair.

I'm hazy about it, but I _think_ that's how it started as a name for the Conservative Party. One of those things that started as an insult and got adopted as just an alternative name, and people forgot it was supposed to be derogatory.
