*ahem* that's an M41A pulse rifle, not a flame thrower.

This would be the M240 Incinerator:

That's clearly muzzleflash. Flamers extend constant flame a few dozen yards. :colbert:
The nitramine-50 propellant used by the 10x24mm caseless rounds clearly creates a white-yellow cylindrical muzzle flash on the M41A when fired.

Either Linda is firing explosive rounds into a squib load (and about to have a very bad day), or that's a flamer igniting from/fading to idle.

I thought in the movie Ripley strapped a flame thrower and the rifle together?

Clearly no M240 in Linda's hands, sorry. I know it's fun to pull an Ack shul lee but comparing shots when one is a cartoon and one a movie is, well, a debate that would cause both of us to be late for the comic book convention. Burritos everywhere.
