It's a genetic thing. Some of my wife's Hispanic/Puerto Rican origin aunts have huge eyes too. They're actually stunning in person.

It can also be a condition (hyperthyroidism I think?). But accompanying the big eyes will be hyper activity, like she will lose temper or try doing stuff too quickly (saw this in a supermarket cashier who was banging the stuff I had bought into the plastic bag. Why would you be embarrassed, it's a good movie. Almost shot for shot remake of the anime version though, and only a small part of the manga but it was still good. That pic also looks like it was before they toned down the eyes though, they did look pretty crazy.
