I don't buy honeycrisp. They're tricky to grow, and there's a danger of them becoming a virtual monopoly at the expense of other fine apples. My goto apples are autumn glory and pink lady. I currently have cosmic crisp in the fridge, and they're very good. Looking forward to staymans coming out in a month or so. Fuck red delicious. Those trees are best used as firewood.

I agree, but wait a minute, don't you use black locus for firewood? Maybe I'm confusing you with someone else, but that still kind of blows my mind. They must be plentiful where you live I'm guessing. That's one great tree, New England wishes we had more. Works better for field posts than cedar.
There will always be the Golden Delicious, the "rooster" apple, and let's not forget the Granny Smith for baking. Can't say I've even heard of cosmic crisp but now I want to try them. We just got a batch of Galas last week that were pretty much apple perfection, just amazing. Bought two big bags of them and by the end of the weekend they were all gone.

I burn locust when I get it. I just climbed one of my trees today to drop some deadwood. My clump out front are in the slow removal phase. They're end of life, and really should be completely removed, but I like them, so I'm keeping them as long as possible. We had a big storm this summer, and a limb blew off one of them and punched a small hole in my garage roof. I have a piece of tin over the hole, but I need to fix it right. I just need some scrap shingle to fix it. I'm hoping I find some on one my jobsites. When I find suitable locust that needs to be removed, I cut fence posts for my boss.
The problem with old locust is it usually has heart rot. All of my older ones have it. I have another young tree that would make great fence posts, but I like it where it is. They're underappreciated trees. The flowers in the spring smell great, and they have an interesting, if non classically beautiful form.

I miss having horses. Never had to do this, that's what farriers are for, but always liked groomin them up. Nothing like a shiny horse. Our girls were always cool with their pedis, it was getting sprayed for flies that made them... unpleasant. Gotta do it though, or apply by hand, those black and bot flies don't play around.

Ack, sorry about the roof. Good on ya, thought you meant you were stackin cords or some shit. I hear it burns great, like beech or oak, but longer and hotter. Shouldn't waste it right? They grow fast, so turn'em into primo posts before that heart rot sets. In Maine the dairy guys say 'Black locus posts will last a year longer than the hole.' They do smell great, big hit with bees who I try to help wherever I can. Leaves can be used as food for livestock, a lot like alfalfa, but you have to watch it with horses. Like a bear in an apple orchard: won't stop can't stop fam. Vet bill incoming.
Edit: Oh hey btw, I finally got around to grabbing a wee Eldris. They are cool little buggers, so much so the wife saw it and yoink. Now my boys each want one too.

The ones in Korea and Japan are pretty impressive, just like the 7-Elevens. You can get actual food there, it's not just greasy hotdogs, lame pizza and a Subway.

Here's my eldris(amongst other knives)...
I have a small paracord loop through the drain holes, and a larger loop around the top with a double constrictor. It's shown with the large loop daisychained so it fits in a pocket easily, and doesn't get in the way. It can be undone to wear around your neck, and it can be put through the drainhole loop to wear upsidedown around your neck. The sheath may become too loose to do that eventually, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. It works well so far.

Nice. That other mora there, is it carbon or 'stainless with miles on it'? I got my eldest the carbon steel version couple years ago (stocking stuffer) and we gave it the vinegar to hit FF on the patina, came out pretty slick. The Scandi grind continues to grow on me, the simplicity of sharpening them with just a flat stone is appealing even for this Tormek fan.
