Yup, pretty good sized catfish gets my vote. Very few fish with no scales, fewer get that big, fewer still are freshwater and have relatively normal looking heads.

That's a catfish, about 90-100lbs probably. Not too smart, not great fighters compared to game fish, but yeah a lot of meat there. Cats that big will go after water fowl, snakes, small mammals, whatever. Imagine noodling for catfish and a monster like that grabs your hand. Game on!

Unfortunately, a catfish that big won't taste particularly good. Younger catfish tend to taste the best... Those bigguns are best left in the water where they'll make a bajillion tastier versions.

I've always considered them survival food or side attractions to water based gatherings. Not really a fan of catfish in general; there are better tasting, less slimy, less smelly fish to go after in my opinion, but I have eaten some tasty examples that other people cooked (my attempts were never that great).

No matter the species, I always release the monsters. For the reason you stated but also in the hopes said monster can thrill at least one other angler in the future.
