I'm confused as to why there are two #38s, so I'd randomly kill one of those first :D

One is a turkey vulture crashing the barbecue.

Real reason: The birds are given three digit numbers but three digits would require larger tags or smaller numbers which would be hard to read. The tag color represents the first digit.

#38 white on black is #538, a female hatched in 2009

#538, "Miracle" is the first completely wild chick in Big Sur in over a century, making her appearance a truly miraculous event in the history of the condor recovery program. Her parents, Condor #209 and Condor #236 laid, hatched, reared, and fledged her without management intervention. Because of this, Miracle represents a positive step towards a more "hands off" approach.


#38 black on white is #438, a female hatched in 2007 in Boise, ID and released at Pinnacles National Park
