I was at my daughter's gymnastic demonstration a few weeks ago. Lots of parents. All the women were recording vertical. All the men horizontal.
Curmudgeons like us still think videos should be recorded for the aspect ratio of a television (or our eyeballs).

Perhaps these women are forward-thinking. They record in vertical orientation because most of the people they show it to will be viewing on a phone while holding it in a comfortable, vertical orientation. They way they share these videos, viewers are rarely watching on a fixed wide-screen display.

It's not a scam. I bought this exact same set up for almost double. Of course I don't have kids though, I use it for when I babysit so they don't bother me while I'm playing Overwatch.
