I think the idea here is that, if they would have had the time to walk up track a mile or two, they would have had plenty of time to work together (looks like a sizable group) to both lift and push the back end. Depending on total group strength, perhaps not enough to prevent scraping/damaging the undercarriage - but that sounds a hell of a lot better than the alternative.
