The other long running throw back joke it reminded me of was the end of Newhart, where at the end of the last episode Bob wakes up next to his wife from his previous series and it was all a dream.

Not quite getting the joke....
At first I thought he would be asleep and you would wake him up and have his head hit the table. Is he trying to use the glass as a zoom for the phone screen somehow?

No, he just wants to watch something while laying down and not having to hold the phone above his head.
