As someone who doesn't know much about poker, and has never watched those professional poker tournaments etc...

can you explain to me what exactly has happened to him?

I mean clearly he got pwned and lost a lot of money, I suspect... but I'd like it spelled out for me, and whether what happened to him was particularly unusual, etc.

I don't play poker either. Here's the video though.

Just lost because of the last card shown and he was sure he would had won so nothing really special other then his expression.

He got what's called "getting sucked out on the river." The river is the last card that is dealt on the board in the game of Texas Hold'em. The guy had the hand won until that queen came and lost it for him. There was only 3 cards in the deck that could have made that happen and one of them happened to come on the river. Doesn't happen often but it sucks bad for the loser when it does and can lead to huge money changing hands.

Basically he have a 93% chance of winning before the last card flip over. The only way he would lose if the last card was a queen. And it was a queen.

Yep.

I love the guy on the left's reaction. Dude made the smart call, and still got trimmed $987k.

If you look very, very carefully, you can see the exact second the wave of gut wrenching, ball twisting horror makes it to his face.

I get pissed if I waste a grand. If it was me in that clip?

If he was that deep in the field odds are at least once, possibly more than once, he was all in with the inferior hand against a guy who made the smart call and caught a card to put a bad beat on the other guy. What goes around comes around.

Actually, yeah I see your point. I freely admit I am a poker neophyte btw, never really been into cards until relatively recently. Strategically, I believe you are correct, but tactically at the time he was going with the "smart" move, obviously calling with favorable odds, right?

Anyway, in the beginning of the .gif I detect a bit of "YOLO! derp derp" from that guy, so him taking that haircut kinda makes me smile. I'll admit that some of that probably comes from me not having tournament worthy skills though. ;)

Yeah, at that point the smarter play didn't win. But in hold 'em tournaments with so many players moving chips around so aggressively, smart decisions don't win a lot of the time. The guy who wins the event isn't the smartest or the best or the guy who played the odds the most often, it's the guy who dodged the most bullets when ahead on the showdown AND who caught some miracles when behind.
